I know thoughts and prayers get a bad rap because they tend to show up in lieu of any actual material assistance but if disconnection and isolation are the issue, and they often are, then I think they actually go pretty far. If I found out some witch was scrawling a sigil of resilience for me or blessing my pets with good health or something I'd be stoked

@eliskunk I did see one on the first night! I used a light and spotted him sitting right at the surface surrounded by pine needles. A slick little forest green guy with the classic black racing stripes on either side. His neck was puffing and deflating impatiently like he was annoyed to be interrupted The second night I went totally lights out and aside from my dog grabbing a quick drink managed to not bug them too much So I mostly only heard them but they were not shy! 🎶🪩

A few nights ago I was walking by this small stream after dark and was impressed by the symphony the frogs were putting on. I returned the next day with a pocket recorder and captured their Springtime chorus.

The full recording is pretty long but this is a fun clip about 3 minutes after I walked away to give them some privacy. At first you'll hear some frogs in the distance but the nearby ones that got a lil spooked by me will start chiming in soon. Headphones! (in stereo) 🐸

So does soundcloud suck these days? Is there a fedi way to share audio recordings?

For context I recently found a stream that was teeming with frogs and it was an absolute croakstorm. I dug out my old zoom recorder when I got home and went out the next night (10 pm seemed like party hour). I'd love to share it but don't really know the best way to do so.

I might clip out a smaller sample to post but I got about 17 minutes on the full recording which might be useful as ambience for something 🐸

@pathunstrom Might be a pitch towards the outside of the plate but I really enjoyed Dredge. I came across it when I was feeling a similar aversion to time pressure in otherwise cozy games that was stressing me out Instead of the constant march of Stardew where it feels like you're trying to beat the day (and the season) the time limit feels really soft. There is a safe/danger cycle but no calendar: day 1 is day 100 Not farming but it has equipment upgrades, collecting, and exploration ⛵

Hey, thanks to everyone who responded or boosted this! Learning about the EIA-608 standard was a helpful lead. I found a standalone encoder on ebay but it was pretty far out of budget. Think I'm going to bite the bullet on the capture and conversion route. Editing and organizing clips would certainly be a lot easier. I am worried about the digital conversion process harshing the analog vibe so there will probably be more questions on framerate and fidelity to come.

Does anyone know how to encode closed captions on #vhs tapes? I know this was probably niche knowledge even when tapes were in active production but is this even feasible without super expensive/rare hardware?

@flaki This isnt the aughts anymore grandpa. I know back in your day people would religiously post to their blogs for years without a hint that anyone had ever read them but we've moved on. Seriously, though, this breaks my heart. It's so hard to find out what you really like in this world with so much external pressure trying to cajole you into pursuits and preferences that aren't yours. It's sad to see kids, historically adept at doing what they want, skip to doing what the algorithm wants 😢
