The Free Knowledge Institute, a public benefit foundation since 2007, is working to build collective capacity around #freeknowledge, #democratictech and #coopcommons economy.

In the last 20 years we've done research and developed the Five Pillar framework for open/commons business models, and through it, we helped set up dozens of initiatives around Europe.

Now it is time to accelerate and build up collective digital resilience. Together we're developing the #DemocraticTechFund

🌍 We just got back from Dweb Camp, hosted by the Internet Archive in the German forest — and what a gathering.

Alongside @commonsnetwork@todon.nl @goteo_fund and friends across the Fediverse, we presented the Democratic Tech Fund prototype and ran sessions on governance, P2P financing, and community-owned social spaces.

Yesterday we had Kollicloud in our community call. The @LIT_Local_IT@mastodon.social team showed how they are able to run cooperative clouds with accessible tooling for communities and organisations. They're building on top of the @coopcloud@social.coop configuration commons, and added some wonderful magic to that.

Running your own cloud and practise #DigitalAutonomy has never been more affordable.

But what is it?
KolliCloud is a ready-to-use integrated hosting toolkit for clubs, NGOs, and collectives. In practical terms it is a curated bundle of approximately fifteen free-software applications — Nextcloud, Authentik, Element/Matrix, Wekan, OnlyOffice, Vikunja, Vaultwarden, and others — deployed as a single integrated platform with single sign-on (SSO), automated backups, and monitoring included from the first minute.

Are you still dependent on Google and Microsoft &co for collaborative workspaces? Stop! we have cooperative clouds that can help you on your way towards digital autonomy.

Here's LaSuite.coop, who brings an integrated suite of open source tooling to your workspace.

Here's our report about them:

Announcing a Community Call with Kollicloud.de and CoopCloud.tech

While many people think their only option is to depend on BigTech for collaborative workspaces and communication tooling, there are in fact many alternatives.

Apps for filesharing, calendering, contacts and for email. Or apps to work in agile mode, to run your projects with powerful Kanban boards for decentralised teams. Instant messaging and chat that are decentralised, so people can connect with one app to all their diverse organisations and communities they belong to.

Tech based in solidarity, commoning, security and privacy, instead of extractivism, monopolies, distopian futures, injustice and surveillance.

We have the pleasure to have as special guests LaSuite.coop, a cooperative in process of setting up, where long time cooperative actors in France joined forces to offer what DINUM provides for public institutions, to offer a similar service but on a cooperative basis. We think this is an excellent idea and want to explore with them the model they are advancing, not only what kind of (neat) apps they are providing to members, such as Visio, Docs, Element and Grist, but also their cooperative model of workers and users, their economic model and their governance model. How is their relation with the French government; how are they funded? Come and join us on this community call on Monday 11 May at 14h CEST. This call is organised by the Free Knowledge Institute with the #DemocraticTechFund and the @coopcloud@social.coop Federation and with @LaSuiteCoop@mastodon.indie.host as special guests. Given the growing awareness of the Digital Coup and the intolerable threats by authoritarian tech, we are hosting a series of community sessions about how we can organise tech differently, in favour of public values, with cooperation and commoning as its foundations.

As you may know, several European governments have set up the EDIC for Digital Commons, a kind of a cooperative between member states, with a mission to “pool resources across member states to reduce technological dependency”.

Under its umbrella they are working together to develop collaborative workspaces for government agencies and public institutions, building on the best open source web applications, and developing new ones, integrating and improving them. Most notably #LaSuite by DINUM @numerique_gouv@social.numerique.gouv.fr, #OpenDesk by @zendis@social.bund.de and #MijnBureau by the Dutch @minbzk@social.overheid.nl

We just got confirmation from the Dutch Tax Authorities that the Free Knowledge Institute has acquired the so-called ANBI status: Public Benefit Organisation in Dutch!

We wanted that status so our donors can obtain tax relief. This is first of all important for Dutch residents, who can claim donations back in their income tax declaration.

But also residents in other, especially EU countries, may obtain tax benefits, as the EU tax rules stipulate equal treatment and non-discrimination in this aspect. However, paperwork might be required.

We work with interested parties to make that process easier.

See here the details: https://freeknowledge.eu/ANBI/

Note that @fkinstitute@social.coop acts as fiscal host for the DemocraticTech.Fund. The Dutch tax authorities are in the process of granting ‘ANBI’ status, that is Public Benefit Organisation in Dutch. This will entitle donors to get tax relief under certain conditions, that may vary by country and based on your personal circumstances. We’re aware that for non-Dutch residents some steps may be hard and we’re connecting with likeminded partners to make this easier. In due time we’ll publish practical documentation about this. The FKI acts as custodian for the DemocraticTech.Fund. The operational details for using the donations are under development. To avoid any doubt, and maximise transparency: any donations received and expenses claimed will be published through the OpenCollective.

We just set up the DemocraticTech.Fund at OpenCollective: https://opencollective.com/democratictechfund We ask anyone willing to support this effort, to make a contribution, ideally a recurring donation. In kind contributions are also very welcome. We consider contributions the cornerstone, what brings this other economy to lfve.

To become a member, making a contribution is vital, in-kind or as a recurring donation. This commitment will give membership rights, and with it, voting rights.

The details of the membership model, social contract and contribution levels is being worked out in the designated working group.

Comparing to existing funds. We’re close to @nlnet@social.nlnet.nl and @sovtechfund@mastodon.social Fund, but where they focus on the core tech development and maintenance, we intent to drive the social capacity. And instead of relying on government funding, we are bottom-up, community-first and then, on our terms, will welcome governments to match the collective effort.

On the tech stack level we work together with the #CoopCloud Federation, sharing the work to build easily deployable and maintainable cooperative cloud services, as a “configuration commons”. So we recently became members of @coopcloud@social.coop. We also hope they, and all of you interested, join this process, and become members of the DemocraticTech.Fund. We haven’t yet worked out all the details yet, but the vision is there and working groups are starting up. Feel welcome to join and connect your work. We’re in it for the long run, together.

We are initiating this with a growing list of organisations, such as @commonsnetwork@todon.nl, @waag@waag.social in Amsterdam, @platoniq@mastodon.social and the Goteo.org crowdfunding platform in Spain. Recently also eCommons.space and the housing coop movement (PWA) in Amsterdam have joined. With them and Amsterdam University College @OpenTech_AUC@social.edu.nl (part of UvA and VU) we’re designing a transition community, building on experiences of so many movements going in this same direction, like the @rtm@social.coop #ResistTechMonopolies in Seattle, or the #VamonosJuntas and #MakeSocialsSocialAgain or #DIDay networked actions.

Last week we met in Amsterdam, hosted by the @internetarchiveeurope@toot.community working together with the @dweb@social.coop team to prepare together for the #DWebCamp in Berlin. This is really exciting, and we’re changing gears! We now have our view at the gathering in Berlin in July, where we’ll be joining some 700 people to rebuild the internet in a decentralised, cooperative solidarity economy basis. This is #commoning! #dweb #commons #decentralisation

Given the #DigitalCoup and the urgency to transition to #DigitalAutonomy, we’re building up the https://DemocraticTech.Fund. It is a networked approach, aiming to increase our collective capacity, to discover the tech that is already available to us, to deploy it in ways that we can own it, to share learnings of the transition, to move there together, so we can overcome network effects.

It is our intention to identify together the gaps of what is needed to make the transition, to fund that collectively. This can be tech, media to raise awareness for the positive alternatives already out there, and federating our communities. We’re starting as civil society, and we intent to invite institutions – public and private – to chip in and multiply the contributions. Together we can make the impact that is needed.

More about the Five Pillar model; in brief the pillars for mission-driven community businesses and initiatives: 1) the community in the centre and with it its shared resources 2) knowledge sharing, typically under open and free licenses to enable replication 3) co-production with less hierarchical organisational models, combining paid work and voluntary, love work contributions 4) participatory co-governance 5) non-extractive, regenerative, diverse income strategies See: https://freeknowledge.eu/five-pillar-model-commons-business-models

Later, during the start of the pandemic, we helped set up meet.coop, the Online Meeting Cooperative where we met many wonderful like-minded people willing to network many transformative socials movements and communities together.

In the last decade we focused more on the commons economy, on how people organise the economy differently from the dominant market-based models, one where mission-driven communities co-govern their shared resources. In the process we developed a framework to analyse and develop sustainability or business models, studying hundreds of cases. We call it the Five Pillar model. We have used it in workshops, in cooperative start-up support programmes and to set up initiatives like CommonsCloud.coop.

As a first toot, here's a brief intro on the FKI; we started almost 20 years ago as a collective working to expand free/libre and open source shared knowledge from the software to other domains of society, like open access, open educational materials, open source hardware, and a flourishing free culture. E.g. we helped organise the Free Culture Forum in Barcelona (2009), ran the Free Technology Academy, with master-level courses on free software. Did various research projects.

Dear fedizens and friends working for a knowledge society based in cooperation without coercion and lock-ins, an economy of contributions, based in common(ing).

Finally we decided to also set up a collective account for our organisation, apart from accounts from team members such as @Wtebbens@social.coop @dvdjaco@mastodon.social @mike_hales@social.coop and @mfioretti_en@mastodon.social.

Good to be here to work together to resist autocratic (tech) leaderships and build collective capacity to communicate, learn, share and ultimately: to live.
