@hopeless @gabrielesvelto really, Google has plenty of edge and hierarchical caches all over the world to absorb that traffic without breaking a sweat. I'm more concerned about the end users and their devices. If there is a DoS, it's from the server to the client, not the other way around.

@gabrielesvelto @hopeless Netflix requires between 0.3GB/hour and 7GB/hour with most users likely at ~3GB/hour. Both handle huge traffic, and 4GB once in a while is really not a big deal (also I hope they recover from partially failed downloads with range requests!)

@gabrielesvelto I bet it's actually cheap for Google. They have network caches (or used to at least for YT) very close to the ISPs, and this kind of payload is very cache friendly.

@hongminhee None of these funding models are healthy actually. Applying for grants every year or so is very fragile, and VC money comes with shackles. But you have to recognize that there is a lot more built on the ATProto side currently than on AP/Mastodon.

It was poorly maintained code in need of a major UX redesign and UX resources were already scarce. Keeping just the button could have worked if integrated with feed reader extensions; I don't know if that was proposed / attempted. Remember that all the good things at Moz at that time happened when someone worked a couple of weeks on a skunk project without telling their manager!

It's true that discoverability suffered but that's the usual tension for platform / OS developers: making your platform better for 3rd parties, or cannibalize it by adding more default features.
