I'm a fully blind programmer. Started with an audio gaming toolkit by accident, now I know stuff like C, rust, python and afew others.
I believe in a better world, free of racism, ableism and all the nasty stuff some people like to belittle everyone else with, also in a future where the commons is much greatter, if not the default way of doing things, where billionaires don't exist to torment us and make our livelyhoods worse with every passing day.
I believe in the fediverse's ability to change the social media landscape, as well as grassroots technologies succeeding where big tech burned all the oxygen from the room.
Free, open source and collaborative software is a big part of the better world, the new world.
We need better free software licenses which don't only focus on the four freedoms, but also on making sure our code isn't used by people with the intention to harm everyone else, commit genocide for example, if we're going to have licenses at all.
Mutual aid networks are essential. They are the backbone of every healthy community, big or small, and also I believe that those are the best tools we have to fight the oppression all around us, the inequitable systems and the slow collapse of a lot of the things we came to depend on over time, which has been steadily accelerating in the last few years.
If you don't see me coding or reading code, usually I'll be reading book series such as the wheel of time or the malazan book of the fallen.
If not that, I'll most likely be watching cartoons or anime, listening to metal music or messing around with other stuff for fun, like trying to learn to sculpt or model stuff, print something with a 3D printer, maybe one day, etc.
Favourite metal bands include Sabaton, Orden ogan, Motionless in white, Metallica and guns&roses.
I'm on my way to understanding anarchism, but I didn't understand it fully yet, so can't say I'm an anarchist just yet, because I'd probably be lieing. Once I'll understand more, this entry in this here place will change.

@acallegaro@mas.to woe, awesome! I wonder, would it have a screenreader or any accessibility features? based on the firmware and the lack of a standard OS like linux, I doubt it. It'd be pretty interesting to see them try to, I dk, compile espeak and make a thin wrapper around it and make it fit in that little RAM, but yeah

@fromjason@mastodon.social @no_brainer@sueden.social @bitbraindev@mastodon.gamedev.place @alice@lgbtqia.space @evan@cosocial.ca I looked at the thing to see what it's about, and at first I didn't get its purpose, or the problem, but then I connected the dots. If you generally post tags with objects, like # thing, then the bot would be called @ thing, which would be kinda strange to see boosting your posts, but nothing really bad. However, if your hashtags are names instead, that's very creepy, way worse and feels like impersonation attacks. So yeah, first, why isn't this opt in? sure, it limits discoverability and all that, but like, the price is too high for a tiny bit more discoverability, there are privacy risks and so on. But also, especially because we have actual relays and we can follow hashtags, at least on mastodon, what's the point of doing this, if not trying to build a global graph or database of the entire fedi? Yeah, this does sound like one of those crawlers/bots, even if the purpose is different...or is it?

@jannem@fosstodon.org @gabriel@fedi.gvisoc.com @aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au @odr_k4tana@infosec.exchange @Gargron@mastodon.social I think there's a fundamental disconnect here, we see a mutually exclusive set of constraints, but I think they, in fact, are not. We can have a simple interface without proprietary code and enshitificatory gadgets built-in. We can have a terminal side by side with a file manager. We can have a gui package updater and a terminal method of doing the same. None of this is mutually exclusive, the only entities who profit from this artificial divide are the corporations working to bring it about. Fundamentally, any open system like what we want from our computers should be able to be configured in any way the user wants, including abstracting complexity away behind a nice gui, without fundamentally changing the paradigm of the platform entirely, and any abstractions built on top of open foundations should be rollable backward so you can go back to looser restrictions if you need to in certain cases. If a system can't go back and forth between these states, then it is neither powerful, nor open. For the car example from further downthread, you don't have to know how a car works, you don't have to be a mechanic, the car has to work and drive you places, and that's fine. However, anyone who has a passion for this stuff and likes to do it should be able to roll back the abstractions and fix your car for you, without them having to work specifically at the same company from which you bought your car. I've seen many of these threads pop up this year for whatever reason, and whenever someone writes a piece like the slow death of the power user, people will often interpret it like everyone needs to know this stuff, everyone has to be taught this stuff, or a variation of the above, and sure some of the discourse around this kinda implies it that way, but the basic premise there is that we're losing the ability to have agency when using our computers, and that agency is crucial for a lot of activism and censorship resistance. So yeah, I think in this instance, unlike many others, we can perhaps have our cake and eat it too.

@HG I mean, all screenreaders have a certain degree of difficulty, because they have to support us through navigating a bunch of things, and their different modes with contextual shortcuts do just that, so unfortunately some learning will have to be done regardless. But this depends on operating system, for windows I recommend nvda, and for linux, orca is the only option rn

@glyph@mastodon.social this reminds me of the idiom behind most xdg desktop portals. Instead of asking if you allow it to see your screen, it asks which screen you want to share with the app, and you can choose nothing. Instead of asking you for storage permissions, it asks you what file you want to send the app, if any. On and on it goes, but yeah, hopefully this would be a thing for more such situations

@LWorksGames I'm looking at the download page and I see...a linux version, awesome! I'm playing it now, it's so much better than doing stuff in a vm. Also, I got the really old version to work in wine, this is night and day compared to that. I dk if it's just wine translating it badly, but yeah, this feels so much better, for example the right arrow doesn't feel stuck after you jump anymore, which used to be a huge reason for which I fell in the pits.

@LWorksGames you can either use the new wsl in windows 11, I think it's called wslg, I heard people were able to run orca on that. Otherwise, I use virtualbox and qemu to virtualize windows and other linux distros on a regular basis. As to what distro to use and stuff like that, if you can make it run on a relatively stable base like ubuntu or debian derivatives, then it should work fine on everything else, at least until nvgt does proper linux packaging with flatpaks, appimages or something like that.

Once I'll understand more, this entry in this here place will change.

also known as @bgtlover I'm a fully blind programmer. @soatok@furry.engineer this is far worse than I thought even possible. I thought it'd stop somewhere reasonable, but nope, it kept going. And sure, this app is bad, horrible and so on, but also look at this paragraph from the article Often when implementing encrypted messages, apps will assign users a public and private key. The public key is what other users use to encrypt messages for them, and the private key is what a user uses to decrypt messages meant for them. I'm not a cryptography expert by any means and I get that simplification is sometimes useful, but this is a horrible way of describing end to end encryption to anyone, especially since the audience of this publication is often tech related from what I know. This is just wrong, I actually have no idea if anyone built an app which encrypts and decrypts all your messages with a single keypair in the last decade. I mean, maybe for pgp setups perhaps, but I thought we're past explaining encryption like it's the 90s, the only good available encryption is pgp and telling people that actually, having very long-term keys is a good thing.

@sophieschmieg @dangoodin ah, interesting! I seem to remember someone saying that quantum computers managed to break sha1 already, spreading FUD about regular encryption and how close we are to everyone's encryption being broken, even though this was already done previously with regular computers. I can't find that article anymore indeed, but the one linked above is the one I was thinking of about doing this with normal computers. I'm trying to read the paper linked to in the article at the top of this thread, but the formatting is a bit weird, at least when reading it with the Firefox PDF viewer, and also the mathematical proofs are rendered with Unicode symbols instead of something that would translate to math ML, making it harder for the screenreader to access it, but I'm getting to understand the basics at least. Thing is, a lot of hype about quantum computers, and FUD about regular ones being obsolete in many instances already, were spreading in the past, same about blockchain and so on, that it's hard to take this stuff seriously anymore, so it's good that more papers from the people actually working with this stuff are being published.

@dangoodin and do we have any further actual advancements than well, this quantum computer reversed sha1, but with considerably more engineering and compute power than a regular computer doing the same thing? That's the last info I have on the topic, and that's not very impressive. Unless they solved keeping QBits stable for a long enough time which they didn't from what I know, I don't think they can crack even something simple like RSA with a very low key length.
