yeah i don't want to speak too confidently on the new user experience, because i'm really not. But i also find the difficulty of just using emacs somewhat overstated.
(though i think all these 'starter' frameworks that get recommended ironically reinforce the impression of difficulty by layering so much complexity on).

I'm currently experimenting with implementing a bunch of cl components that eventually, hopefully, maybe assemble into a zotero replacement for myself.
I just made my WIP cl implementation of a backend for the zotero browser plugin public.
I hope to get that to a state where it also can be used independently of any other cl experiments of mine, e.g. as a importer for any of the existing emacs bibliography tools.

@mousebot@todon.nl @pkw that nextcloud library is kinda an abandoned experiment, i don't even remember how functional it actually is. But i think the ieda was to make it into a cli tool that can serve as a backend for both emacs and ranger frontends.

and then there's and/or ... i feel like the 'stronger typing' angle is not that convincing when the 'true' case isn't consistently typed anyway.
that said this was my major pain point coming to scheme from cl but it's been a while since i've even had to think about it, despite not writing that much scheme. So i guess i got over it?

the reason the fedi didn't take off with media and humanities people is that twitter for them was linkedin but the linkedin side of fedi is strictly tech people

Linsen Salat -- (festkochende) Linsen kochen, abkühlen lassen, irgendein grüner Blattsalat + Tomaten + Feta/Hirtenkäse + Oliven rein, Basilikum, Oliven-Öl, Balsamico-Essig, Pfeffer, Salz, bisschen Honig. Fertig.
Lässt sich super mitnehmen, muss nicht mal aufgewärmt werden mach ich im Sommer gefühlt 2 mal die Woche.
Wahlweise können die Linsen auch mit Nudeln ersetzt werden, dann evtl noch Kichererbsen rein.

I've written a whole ass programm that once a week sort my downloads order into subdirectories by date, and deletes duplicates because i couldn't bring myself to just delete stuff

a) we're talking about systemd and related projects that are infrastructure for basically every non microsoft/apple desktop I could recommend to newbs.
b) Again the current iteration is almost minuscule, but it's the general trend towards locked down devices. The impetus of these laws is a push in the direction of the situation of mobile devices at which point you might as well say 'noone forces you to use a computer' (Also the mobile space already provides the model for how the "noone forces you" always has a 'yet' implied. Evenn without laws there is software that I *need* to access existentially important services which I could not use without a 'trusted' device; see banking software, app-only ticketing etc.).
But we don't need to continue this. All I'm saying is this no big deal attitude will backfire and we absolutely need software projects asserting their opposition. (And I'm not willing to cede this field to fucking lunduke).
No I don't expect everyone to take the bullet, but I expect the acknowledgement that there is indeed a choice.

Laws that I don't have direct influence on, not even the bit of voting power i might have had in the us, affecting what kinda control mechanisms are normalized in software i rely on? How could that be upsetting. The US exports these policies.

It's part and parcel with similar pushes for 'trusted environments' on end user devices. It's building infrastructure.
And yeah in its current iteration it is almost minuscule, that's why it's so alarming that compliance is so eager.

right, at some point it starts being my problem because I'm sitting downstream of this code. People are responsible for the code they write and the harm it does. This is how you talk yourself into 'just following orders'. You're free to act out of self preservation. I'm free to withhold my sympathy.
And we're talking here about laws that are not even yet in effect, and compliance implemented by someone who isn't in the position to be held responsible in the end either. The stakes could not be lower. How am I supposed to trust that there is a point at which I downstream won't be thrown under the bus by these projects, when the stakes inevitably will be higher?

We will need to get used to questioning the legitimacy of 'the law' including the possibility that compliance might be unethical. Not just in the US context, but definitely in the US.

No i think i did, your take is a bit like being mad at tenants for wanting to *own* their houses.
Saying 'renting' the domains is how it should be makes it sound like the registrars are a benevolent instance caring for the commons that is the limited dns space. Like they have a right to own domains in perpetuity, renting them out, creating, as you say, monopoly power.
Sure individual ownership doesn't solve the fundamental problems of dns but
the registrars really don't need to be defended as the good guys here.
