You hit one of my favorites. i’ve lost count of the conversations I’ve had about “AI”, (LLMs) where someone brings that up, and I point out that it isn’t an LLM, they tried to hold the point and move on, but I don’t let that happen.

My only quibble is that so many members of this are both

I use them on everything, and when I catch a glimpse of what the internet looks like without them, I can't understand how any would try and use the internet without them.

This is exactly the spell chosen by Fern in the anime/manga Freiren.

I rely on my uncertainty. I’m pretty sure the world would be a better place without a lot of people I deal with, but on the small chance I’m wrong, I don’t kill them.

When I was a newspaper editor, this is how I handled writing editorials. Not sure what happened while I was asleep, but my thoughts were always more clear and well organized in the morning.

One thing I've noticed, and I don't know how well it's going to hold, is, up to now, the generators struggle with POV and perspective. Obviously that doesn't apply to a lot of the things they are touting, but we are going to need everything at out disposal to keep this stuff in check.

More than a decade ago my daughter had a small garden in the corner of the yard and planted some mint.
It definitely has spread a bit, but I get to enjoy a nice minty freshness every time I mow.

Something that rarely gets discussed, but is central to people using LLMs marketed as "AI":
For most people, most of the time, the penalty for being wrong is nothing.
There are a lot of reasons for that.
Sometimes it's because they never get/take feedback. Other times, it really didn't matter in the first place, it's relatively easy to correct, or a lot of time passes before the error becomes an issue.
There are probably a lot of other reasons, but those came quickly to mind.

Strangely enough, it seems like going backwards (really far back) is the way forward. Testing, even through the medium of writing, is much more “gamable” than an oral exam. It seems that Socrates guy was onto something.

I'm mostly a consumer here, and my interactions have been online only. I'm not aware of a single person in my off-line life who has decided to join the fediverse (and that's not due to my lack of recommending it).
To be fair only one off-line friend was a Twitter user pre-Musk. She has half-heartedly joined Blue Sky, but that is not the fediverse.

I think you're right (at least right now). Mastodon isn't necessarily the social media place for everyone, but it's certainly the place for me.

Regarding the Strait -- through which 15 ships passed today -- what happened?
You'll see stories that say Iran gave in. That's bullshit.
Here's what happened:
On Feb. 27, the price of oil was ~$70 a barrel. Trump did something vile & stupid.
Today, the price of oil is ~$108.
A good chunk of that additional $38 goes to Iran as a toll & the rest goes to Trump's sleazy cronies.
Because oil is profitable at $70.
So you now pay ~50% more for gas and the US has wasted billions of $.

Best case scenario “invector” is a racist stooge using AI to produce his slop, if not a bot entirely.
I’ve already blocked it. You are never going to be making a big mistake by blocking any account that shows up selling “racism isn’t a problem.”

This stuff isn’t “taking over Spotify” etc. because people are seeking it out, it is being algorithmically shoved in their ears by these sleazy corporations.
They 100% control the algorithm, it’s trivial to favor their generated garbage over actual music from an actual artist.

I would bet that I probably would not be able to say something was AI generated on first listen, but after hearing it a few times I would know. And I don’t think it’s because I’m a special flower, I think most people (+70% ) would as well.
Also, the fake music isn’t “sweeping the internet“ it’s being algorithmically shoved into people’s feeds.

History is so filled with things that people (to be fair, mostly capitalists) thought were really good ideas that turned out to be disastrous that my head spins.
Lead in pipes, paint, etc. is certainly one, but, of the top of my head,
Radium watch faces
Thalidomide
Indiscriminately spraying DDT (the pictures of kids running after the trucks are truly mind boggling)
I’m sure there’s plenty more, but, apparently, we need to learn the same lesson over and over and over

It appears the idiot Trump regime is looking for the exit.
No talk of regime change or unconditional surrender today, but who knows with this psychopathic and idiotic crew.
The other thing, of course, is Iran could decide on it's own that it's not over and keeping targeting Israel.
And a lot of the region, and the world, would be disinterested at best.
