I am staying up wayyy too late, playing video games (Halo Infinite, if you must know). I do this every now and then. I also always regret it the day later as my old gnarled sysadmin fingers don't like playing FPSes much these days. Yes, I will regret this tomorrow.

My German friend and his partner are visiting Canada. He’s lived here before, and this was her first visit. Her English is better than my German - as a teenager I picked up just enough German to understand README.txt files from Commodore Amiga software from Germany.
“Bitte legen Sie die diskette ein!” isn’t exactly conversational German, but it did elicit a few laughs.
(I did make sure to properly thank them for their visit in German later though!)

Two big items to note:
There’s no “engagement algorithm” here. Your feed only shows you posts from people you follow and posts they’ve “boosted” (retweeted)! So if it seems quiet, follow more people!
There’s also no full-text search across all of Mastodon (intentionally). Hashtags are how we find stuff. So use them liberally!
