@wdormann@infosec.exchange with the concerns over CVE’s I wondered why no one had heard of BID’s. 25 years ago Bugtraq ID’s were the most common id for vulnerabilities.

@briankrebs @Doomed_Daniel an alert pops up. You can see it using common MitM systems. Some home routers inject error messages to https when not connected to the Internet and it triggers a warning. I sometimes get notified that Microsoft has revoked a certificate intermittently. I think they revoke certificates when they get a new one, but don’t manage to get the new one deployed to all gateways right away.

Replying to @hazelweakly@hachyderm.io
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io there should be a lot more standardization. All this public money could create a lot of valuable open source. I’m frustrated by my city’s push to more advanced apps that make it harder to predict when the bus will actually arrive because the underlying timing data doesn’t adjust properly for delays (uneven smoothing). The underlying data could use some work too as it doesn’t get changed even when the route has major detours.

@tychotithonus@infosec.exchange UX can drive sales and is getting more attention. Security is a bigger concern and is getting some attention. Retention of developers might drive reducing technical debt and complexity. Claude code calls out use cases for understand code without it being readable which is concerning. I worry about the days where the code becomes misread. I remember also an older developer reusing a variable to store a minimum and it was called max_size. I understood the code and didn’t notice.

@tychotithonus@infosec.exchange hah. That reminds me of a story. “I needed a very secure type of paper.” https://news.sky.com/story/money-for-nothing-the-story-of-the-biggest-counterfeiter-in-us-history-11942377 I actually read about another case with someone interested in the holographic protections in Canadian money. He expressed so much enthusiasm for learning that the companies enjoyed helping him learn. It was only later they learned the real reason was for counterfeiting. I can’t find the article right now.

@millihertz@oldbytes.space I try to pay it forward and answer questions where I want to ask questions. Several times on IRC I helped a few people and didn’t have any luck. I’ve seen better answers on the fediverse, though some questions require domain expertise. Mixed used to be common. The were many distros that were 32bit and could take a 64bit kernel. I believe some for a while required this split. Now multiarch, containers, chroot, and emulation are used. I’m sad I cannot answer better yet.

Regulating youth instead of regulating social media companies. Providing social media companies with more data to harvest, and easier targeting.

@1000millimeter@chaos.social @petrillic@hachyderm.io “security by obscurity”. FIPS 140 at higher levels has hardware security requirements blocking modification. I doubt companies will hit FIPS requirements and nor should they strive for it given typical use cases. I’m hopeful about right to repair laws helping get better documentation of hardware.

How do I explain that some security like multi-factor authentication isn’t worth it everywhere? “Most people don’t have MFA on their TV”? I’m not sure people asking understand things like air gaps.

I know MFA is one of the few questions on cyber-insurance policies, and one of the few cybersecurity directives out of the Whitehouse a few years back. I also know how bad “something you know” is for security.

@buffaloseven@mstdn.ca very cool app, thanks for sharing 🙂 I’m trying to focus on a smaller set of edited content so Libby is where I do most of my reading. Actually most of it is audio books as I’m in my car several hours a day. I’ve hardly made a dent in my stack of paper books from last year’s annual Children’s Hospital book sale at St Vital mall. The next sale is coming April 24-26: https://goodbear.ca/events/childrens-hospital-book-market/

The generators are worysome though any good #datacenter has backup generators. Generators to provide regular electricity could be a problem.

Does Bell Canada have a partnership with AI companies? Is this just a datacenter rebranded? Are the Epic/BellMTS datacenter (now Equinix) on Waverley and the Videon one (now Rogers) still underused? Is there a chance that the many Crypto datacenters in MB can be converted? #Winnipeg #Manitoba #MBPoli #MBPol

@da_667 I’ve been at improvements for decades inside companies. Automated scans in pipelines, and IDE tools make things a lot better for those that care. I’ve worked with many developers that take pride in their work, and just need guidance. Reported vulnerabilities motivate many internally to improve not just the one problem, but the system involved. It still takes time to change (though far less now). Sprints are measured in weeks, and work needs justification (like a report).

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social I found this well written analysis of an anecdote easier to understand, communicate, and use: https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2026/05/11/mythos-finds-a-curl-vulnerability/ The author answers lots of questions too. We are in a year of rapid growth in vulnerability reports (as badger has also posted about) so I’m disappointed that Mythos can’t do more. I’m sure I missed details and will read these blogs again.

@Rickd6 @da_667 many of them do. Justification helps. Organizations have many people. You’re right that it’s not perfect, and I could tell many stories. There are many people trying to do the right things. Most individuals take pride in their work. I hear you that things are getting worse, and it’s hard to see any improvements.

@mcc@mastodon.social the bigger problem is a lack of understanding both now, and after a change. The current system is well understood despite its flaws. I am discouraged by the disinformation and misinformation after a change causing a loss of confidence. There are risks like unelected party appointees that come with mixed proportional representation. That problem more points to a need of reform for how parties choose candidates and is a bigger worry for all voting systems.
