@totalclaireity@toot.lgbt I always find it's easiest to ask the person wanting to connect (person's A and C), if you can send their phone number to B. They should be totally ok with this, and it means person B gets to make the choice. It also reduces the amount of postman work you have to do in the process.

I've been given to believe that e.g. steel has a crystal like structure, and what you do when you harden it (heat to x °C, then quench) - is that you're making that crystal structure more organized... Hence both the hardness, and the brittleness. Now that you've explained this, I realize that I've always thought of metal interior structure as a quasi crystal, and that that is probably wrong.

@dpreacher@freeradical.zone it's meant to cover specific expenses. So I do a per item estimate. As soon as you buy a car, you can predict an annual service, changing the tires after 5 years (or sooner if you drive a lot). And you can estimate the price. Just remember to adjust it for inflation, every year!

@dpreacher@freeradical.zone if the balance builds up too much (yes, it's that subjective), then I either pull a future expense forward (we can do the bathroom remodel early), or just do something else useful (buy a power tool, whatever). It's never a problem. Also, the whole thing is deliberate enough that I find my natural impulsivity isn't a problem either.

@dpreacher@freeradical.zone I have a "rare expenses" spreadsheet that lists the things I've found trip me up. Replacing car tires every ~5 years, for example. Also replacing the mattress, my prescription glasses, etc. The spreadsheet breaks it all down to how much I should put away monthly, to cover the expense when it comes up. I have a recurring transfer set up that moves that much money into a savings account. Since doing this, there have been far fewer stressful financial events.

Inkjet or Laserjet is fine, monochrome is fine. It has to have a scanner with an ADF.

Other than that, we don't need a lot - reliability and longevity.

Repairability is probably a pipe dream, right?

@nlowell@indieauthors.social I fell into the trap of becoming a connoisseur. You know - that guy that can spot the smallest mistake in rhythm or interpretation. It ruined classical music for me, probably for ever (it's been 20 years, I'm still recovering). More popular music is still enjoyable at times, but I find it hard to get into it in the way you describe. My best success has been to go to the opposites: punk rock, Goa trance, Metallica. There is beauty and joy to be had.

Physical skills first: making things, flying/driving every kind of vehicle, all kinds of sports. But also languages, cultures, different kinds of people. I'd probably write stories, too.

The real reason for changing anything at all, is that when I set up this system 5 years ago I just took the archinstall defaults... Including btrfs instead of ext4. It works, but needs more maintenance than I want to give it. Also... Not sure it's great for performance on a desktop system. Anyway, thanks for helping me rubber duck this.. I know what to do now :-) (Switch to ext4 but keep i3. It works, don't mess with it.)
