@ryanc@infosec.exchange Dear tiny little IoT devices... Long ago when I was working at Purdue there was a device somewhere in the datacenter - you could terminal in, you could ping it, but nobody could find it. Quite a bit of tracking it down later, a Sparc IPX was found UNDER the floor, in a pile of cables. But this one still takes the cake: https://www.theregister.com/on-prem/2001/04/12/missing-novell-server-discovered-after-four-years/1321919

@mbpaz@mas.to @flexion@oldbytes.space I'll admit I didn't do as much with Sun gear at that scale. I ran into a lot of Sparcstations and IPCs/IPXes, but didn't get to the bigger stuff from them until later in my career - and then it was all rackmount datacenter stuff. The research computing datacenter folks I know will deny to this day that they almost toppled an entire rack of heavy gear by unloading it in the wrong order!

@flexion@oldbytes.space I worked for a video production company, so we ran a lot of Discreet Logic's Flame/Smoke/Fire workstations - so Octanes and Indigo 2's (and I think I recall a Tezro by the end - we were switching to Windows boxes for a lot of things by then). My own collection has an O2, which is still dense but at least it's not too bad to move around!

@flexion@oldbytes.space Now I'm debating which old iron was the most painful to move back when I supported a fleet of SGI boxes at one job and a bunch of DEC and other gear at another. Memory says that the SGI gear was denser (and heavier) than the Windows and Macs for sure!

@0xabad1dea Much to my chagrin, I share a first and last name with a GI doctor. SO MUCH medical recruiting spam, with some insane numbers for take home if I'm willing to do 12+ surgeries a day. I'm down to wishing for persistently annoying misfortune to strike the data brokers who have merged my contact information with his data, because it's a losing fight doing anything else like opting out and chasing down individual brokers as I find them doing so.

This is a bit different from my typical posts - it's directly work related, and it's a job post.

But it's also exciting. Miami University is hiring the inaugural director for the Ohio Quantum Computing Institute.

https://miamioh.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/miamioh-faculty/job/Director--Ohio-Quantum-Computing-Institute_JR103868.

There's a lot going on at Miami - and in Ohio around quantum, and the Institute is intended to grow Ohio's quantum workforce.

https://www.ohiotechnews.com/miami-university-investment-quantum-computing-workforce/

I'd appreciate folks sharing this with quantum oriented higher education folks who might be interested!

I've been playing with Google's Antigravity AI IDE, and have enjoyed it. But it also led to me typing a line that really struck me: "I wonder if I can vibe code a BBS-style door game as a Slackbot".

I think I can, and 1990's me is pretty tickled about the idea.

@jwgoerlich @wendynather The more ludicrous the sponsorship, the better. "This talk on Zero Trust brought to you by Coke Zero. Look, at least it has Zero something, right?"

@jwgoerlich I was picturing the reaction from @wendynather when you interrupt your next conversation 2-3 minutes in with a short commercial break. 😆
