@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @mjg59@nondeterministic.computer That's good to hear (and of course you're right, Sphere took the Pluton IP from xbox peripherals but afaik Sphere was the first product release for IOT device OEMs before it was then licensed to AMD and offered to PC OEMs) I worked on some fTPM ARM stuff before Sphere and it's a strange rollback given that pluton is its own hardware IP and fTPM is just a piece of software running in yet another CPU mode. So maybe the LTSC cycle alignment is just a coincidence.

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer probably that's an indication that most people of the Azure Sphere project (where pluton came from) have left and there is no business case to keep maintaining it. Since Sphere and Pluton were shipped in 2020 and had a 10+3 year support window at the time which ends 2033ish , this just barely matches the extended support window of the 2024 LTSC of Windows which ends 2034. A new Windows LTSC would extend beyond the support window of Pluton.

@isotopp@infosec.exchange Aus Microsoft-Sicht entsprach das relativ genau dem Zeitpunkt zu dem Win7 ausentwickelt war und seitdem steigt die Single-Thread-Performance des Endgeräts praktisch nicht mehr, desswegen lief Windows 10 so gut wie auf allen Windows 7-Geräten. Neue CPU-Generationen mit mehr Cores und mehr Speicher haben auf der Client-Seite mehr mit Ineffizienz der Anwendungssoftware (z.B. Electron, Browser, aber auch die ganze "enterprise client management" software) als mit echtem Performance-Gewinn zu tun. Den letzten echten Zuwachs gab es von XP->Vista->7 wobei sich 7 und Vista auf Kernebene praktisch kaum technisch unterschieden, aber zum Releasezeitpunkt von 7 hatte die Hardware einfach aufgeholt und deswegen wurde 7 populär. Seit 7 kam der Umstieg auf 64 bit (d.h. mehr als 4G DRAM) und einige CPU-Features (insb. Kern und IO-Virtualisierung) dazu, die haben für Clients ein paar Verbesserungen im Bereich Sicherheit gebracht, aber sind hauptsächlich für Server eingebaut worden.

But I have used the novel "name of the rose" as an example as the scene I think about here is a situation in which a medieval monk novice has an unintended but consensual sexual encounter with a woman. The words Eco uses to describe this from the narrators, i.e., the monk's point of view are essentially holy texts (since our poor monk has no other words to describe the experience) while the fact of what happens is quite sinful in the perception of the poor novice. Nevertheless, this text would very much be considered forbidden under your law. So here are holy texts, in this case excerpts of the bible and other catholic books to describe sexual pleasure. So these should be forbidden? So now your law censors religious texts. So you might say "but it's the context", but that depends on the recipient of the communication. So you might say "then block it and people can take it to court" and people will and clog the court system with every single expression. We've all been down this road before, limiting communication based on vague cultural categories does not work. There is a fighting chance (but still difficult) to limit speech on hard categories such as calls for violence, defamation, fraud etc. and already here we're struggling. It somewhat works for public speech with a recognizable speaker. It doesn't really work well across borders and different legal systems. Limiting speech in private, encrypted channels such as VPNs for vague categories such as pornography is a waste of time and effort. The thing that in my opinion actually works is targeting the source, i.e., making creation, distribution and monetization illegal. Which is practically already the case for CSAM but needs an update regarding AI-generated images. Let's start there.

@footrest@mastodon.social I'm not thinking anything, I am somewhat of a veteran of too many "wars on crypto" that I think any attempt of regulation in its naive form of "Nerds! Nerd harder!", i.e., find a solid, stable and permanent technical solution for a problem of society and then mandate a global uniform technical adoption is a waste of time. "blocking pornographic content" is such a "nerd harder" thing, something humans cannot agree on, in this case "what is pornography" will not be solved by any technical implementation, not even with AGI. My specific point in this case is "read who has said what", in this case, a service of the parliament was asked to provide a TLDR that fits in the busy timetable of the members of the European parliament. An author was assigned and, imho, did a bad job cutting and pasting quotes. This is not an opinion of the European Parliament, this is not an opinion of the Commission, this is not a draft of legislation. This is noise. Treat it as such. Sorry for the rant, but I see this story popping up everywhere across my newsfeeds and it's a waste of time.

@masek@infosec.exchange There may be investors that you lure by this type of behavior. I have seen this pattern in the startup ecosystem in a form of "pretend you're a unicorn until enough people think you're a unicorn and give you the valuation of a unicorn". The reason it works is that in many cases, there are no solid facts in an emergent business domain where startups operate, so people come up with all kinds of proxy features they believe will reduce their risk of being wrong. "Investing in the team", "total addressable market", "experience as a founder" down to the dresscode and "techbro" culture are all cargo cult proxy features of successful past startups. Some of them are necessary but not sufficient. Some are pure "vibe", especially in early tech startups. And survivorship bias does the rest and you have "successful" startup investors on linkedin bragging about their "secret sauce".

Microsoft spending roughly 20B on DC investment isn't the same as buring 20B per quarter on using somebody else's DCs. And the 20B DC capacity added isn't just used for powering Copilot but also for selling that DC capacity to others. Microsoft isn't losing money, it's making 28B *after* investing into additional DC capacity. You can still ask if that's a clever investment going forward but this is not "spending 3-5 USD to make 1 USD"

@LorenzMeyer Vielleicht sollte man die ganzen Einhorn-Projekte (Magnetschwebebahn, Mini-AKWs, Fusionsreaktoren...) die letzte Woche aufgetaucht sind in diesem Kontext sehen. Die Bundesregierung wird sich demnächst zerknirscht geben und dann nächstes Jahr in wirklich zusätzliche Dinge investieren, also Magnetschwebebahnen, Mini-AKWs etc. die dann zufällig alle in den richtigen Wahlkreisen und von CDU-nahen Unternehmen umgesetzt werden. Und dann ist leider aus dem Sondervermögen kein Geld mehr da für Schulen, Bahnsanierung und Klimaanpassung.

If you're there around lunchtime and the weather is good, go to the "Frau im Mond" rooftop restaurant, good food, reasonable prices and a great view over the Isar river. Try to also go to the two outposts of the Deutsche Museum: Verkehrszentrum (they have the Ernst Dickmanns autonomous car from the 1990s) and Flugwerft (in the north, they have the Dornier DO 31 VTOL cargo plane)

@isotopp@infosec.exchange Ich glaube der andere Grund für die "Vorschläge" ist auch, dass ein großer Teil der deutschen Chemieindustrie und des verarbeitenden Gewerbes auf Gas als Grundstoff, Prozessgas oder Energieträger angewiesen ist und das bisher so schön funktioniert hat, wenn die Infrastruktur dafür über die Haushalte und die Gaskraftwerke quersubventioniert wird. Ich denke das wird auch die ein- oder andere Wirtschaftlichkeitsberechnung verändern.

@kuketzblog@social.tchncs.de Immer wenn ich Fachkräftemangel lese, ersetze ich das durch "Mangel an billigen Fachkräften". Im Laufe des letzten Jahres sind in meinem Umfeld mehrere in DE ausgebildete Fachkräfte mit ausländischen Wurzeln weggezogen weil sie dort wo sie jetzt leben einen besseren Deal bekommen in Bezug auf Lebensqualität, Lebenshaltungskosten, Nettoeinkommen etc.
