Happy Friday! Today's picture has a detail I've never seen in real life, but if it actually occurred on a running engine would cause significant enough damage as to render the engine unusable. If you have no idea what this is a picture of, that's OK. If you recognize this image but not the problem, that's OK too. It just means you need to seek out the input of someone knowledgeable in this area. There's no shame in admitting you don't know everything and that you need someone else's expertise.

One of the most satisfying things for me is seeing a couple of names pop up every few days as new #Signal users in my Signal app. Progress, little by little.

Recall sees all. ChromeOS is just another way for Google to sell ads to you. Even Apple isn't entirely immune from slurping up your data. One of the most radical acts of privacy you can commit online these days is refusing to work with these operating systems that treat your data like their data. Hearing a lot of talk about "AI going rogue." The head of OpenAI has been quoted as saying that their AI went rogue and attacked a Hugging Face database. Sorry folks, this is #ToxicAnthropomorphism. AI is software. Software is, ultimately, written by humans. What he's trying not to say is this: His company didn't write their own software well enough, and didn't test it well enough before they put it on live systems and it then did something they didn't expect it would do. He's literally trying to shift the blame for what he and his company did to the software "going rogue." What makes this even worse is that his company developed this software, they aren't the customer blaming their own supplier. They're trying to deflect blame from themselves to...a bunch of code. Code that didn't write itself. Code that isn't responsible for testing itself. Don't let them pass the buck to their own creation by means of anthropomorphizing it.

We've conditioned ourselves to think about privacy in some detrimental ways. "What do I have to hide?" is probably the single worst question to ask, but it is one of the three mistakes we seem to make repeatedly. Happy Friday! Today's image makes me ask the question: what happens when it is time to change out this faucet? I know from experience that installing a new faucet is almost always easier than removing the old one. Though in this case both may be a struggle. This feels like the result when someone tries to shoehorn too many conflicting features into a single system. Then when a feature is no longer right for the system it can't be change out easily. Good systems are modular, and serviceable.

All I'm asking is that you accept the expertise of those who may challenge your views and beliefs, so long as their credentials are appropriate. When in doubt consult other experts for their input. Otherwise you'll need to become an expert in, well, everything, and that's a pretty tall order as far as I can tell.

Now if I tell you, as a cybersecurity professional, that PII, PHI, and other similar data should be treated as a liability and not an asset will you simply believe me? Do I need to explain it to you for you to accept that as true? Do you need to prove it to yourself first? If you were more resistant to taking my word for the second item than the first, why? Is it because I lack business credentials, and this is a business decision? Is it because collecting PII is your business model?

There's a reason you never see a pre-made 110V or 240V electrical connection with two different plug connectors and only one socket connector. They're simply a bad idea. Just like a cable with a plug connector at each end. Bad. Very, very bad.

As I am an electrical engineer, do you need me to explain it to you, or are you willing to just take my word for it? Or are you unwilling to accept that this is a bad idea unless you prove it to yourself somehow?

The past two days saw the first Linux Village event focused on helping the "Linux Curious" learn some of the basics and try out Linux as their daily driver OS. There will be many more to come, but thanks to @CypherCon@infosec.exchange for giving us the space to do this.

Sometimes the best way to recognize dependencies is to try to do without them. From there you can decide which ones to decouple from because you can't afford to be stuck without.

@ahoneybun @magitian I suppose it is a bit of a nebulous ask. I'm thinking things along these lines: Setting up printersInstalling software (Debian focus, so APT, Flatpack, .deb files, etc.)Adding users How to use SUDO properly ...that's a few examples. I know that most Linux distros don't have particularly robust documentation.

@KasTasMykolas Old data definitely haunts a lot of those sites. One of the reasons I'm looking for suggestions.

For context: I'm doing a Linux Village at @CypherCon this year, and I want to have some great resources available for people to use after the conference is over.

As we all start struggling to find/afford computer parts this year, remember your childhood "stranger danger" training. It can keep you safe even at your current age.

So my local library has the sublimation printer, and my spouse has the heat press. So tonight we made a prototype mousepad. We also made a bunch of can koozies. All of this for @CypherCon one month from today. We are doing a Linux Village both days. #CypherCon #Linux #Linux Village

Sublimation printing your own mousepads is kinda fun. It helps having a makerspace at the library and a crafty spouse.

Just because you CAN connect something to the Internet doesn't mean you should. So much of today's internet connected systems are monitoring you - have ever read about the info your "smart" TV collects about what you watch?

If you're more sophisticated you can opt to connect your devices to your local network and block Internet access, but that's advanced stuff. As a rule ask yourself this: do I NEED the Internet for this to work? If the answer is "no," then don't connect it.

So why do builders install fire safety systems?

I'll give you a hint: it isn't because they feel a strong need to protect you and your possessions from burning. When you figure that out, apply the same logic to this question: why don't online companies provide really strong security and privacy? I have some thoughts on that topic, and I'll encourage you to follow the link and read them.

They may have legal requirements that allow government access to your stored data and running systems - and may even not be able to tell you that access has occurred.

They may have a different idea of who is "authorized" to see your data and who isn't.
