@aworkinglibrary@mstdn.social reminds me of John Perry Barlow's aphorism, turning the Silicon Valley cliche upside-down: "The best way to invent the future is to predict it"

@c0rb34u@hostux.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr yes, intercultural exchanges happened in the context of deeply unequal access to publishing, remuneration, etc. Copyright law itself is a product of this racism, as Matthew D. Morrison makes abundantly clear in his history of copyright and blackface minstrelsy, _Blacksound_. All I was pointing out is for light-skinned immigrants from places other than Northern Europe, this was not as simple as "white man steals credit from black man." First of all, Maggio would not have been considered white, and indeed the discourse on swarthy Sicilian anarchists at the time was racialized. Italian immigrants claims to whiteness through appropriating Black music really picked up a few years later with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band

@c0rb34u@hostux.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr interestingly, under immense pressure from society, Maggio later renounced both his jazz and anarchist past

@c0rb34u@hostux.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr publishing industry, definitely racist though! The fact that he could have this "first" was of course overdetermined by skin color / racial caste

@c0rb34u@hostux.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr I wouldn't say it's that simple. It also points towards how freedom-oriented people and practices influenced each other in urban space. Ben Barson's recent book _Brassroots Democracy_ is an amazing portrait of this era

@pluralistic@mamot.fr fun fact: a self-proclaimed anarchist, Antonio Maggio, published the first 12-bar sheet music with "blues" in the title, in 1908. Fascinating story, detained without trial after McKinley was assassinated: https://www.bluescenter.com/2017/07/27/814/

@rwg@aoir.social it's a disturbing sign—in English, "my" can either connote possession ("my bike") or kinship ("my brother"). The idea that so many people have been tricked into believing either of those things about something like Facebook is ... Not Good

@Wtebbens @fkinstitute the answer isn't just having the right idea, though. That has been clear for at least a few years (thanks in large part to your efforts, which are deeply appreciated!) I see so many people who get it and are ready to build (or already building) what you call for but very little higher-order support—training, consultation, incubation, etc. Whose resources will help make the space for these ideas to go from experiments to sustainable initiatives? We can't just bootstrap it.

@ntnsndr I was wondering if you two had connected, I share your concerns. It feels like A Corps only make sense if you ignore coops. Which a lot of people in the US do, but clearly that's a choice and not just garden variety ignorance on his part if he asked you for advice

@kim my understanding is that it's because they don't prioritize minimizing audio latency in how the tools are designed. JackTRIP, Sonobus, FarPlay are examples of tools designed to minimize latency (even better than zoom in my experience!) Longer distances make this problem worse but most of the latency is in the software design and hardware setup. For example, if connecting via Bluetooth headphones it increases latency a lot
