If you consider yourself "nontechnical" or feel that computers are for someone else to understand: What are some questions you have about social media, the internet, computers, phones, linux? What you wish you understood, to help you make decisions about your digital life and digital communities. These could be "how does X work" but also "why do we do things this way" or "would it be possible to Y". I'm chatting with a local collective about running some talks or workshops along these lines. Try to get normal folks comfortable talking about change they want to see. I have some ideas for topics but want to know what people actually care about. I've gotten into this 3-day habit of getting curry ingredients, then next day sharpening knives and spending a few hours peeling and chopping, then next day putting it all into a giant pot and making the damn thing. I feel like I'd like to do this all in one day, but I don't know yet how to collect so many spoons at once.

Witch tips:

Music is an excellent channel for spiritual energy. When a musician is inspired, that spirit enters their performance. Recordings are effectively potions, bottled for when you need them. Keep a bandolier of spirits on your phone.

Be cautious of large production houses which write and produce music based only on rational analysis. Much of what they offer is diluted and has low potency, though a skilled performer can still add a lot of power to the right song.

Finally, consider sticking around for opening and ending credits when watching films and TV. Making the music a central part of the experience can breathe soul into a narrative.

Love that in "The Invisible Man and His Soon-to-be Wife" the titular invisibility is made not-a-big-deal because all the characters are from marginalized groups.

Actually, I wonder if this is why the TV is always on in some households. Like, it would start as a way to bond over shared stories, but eventually become the safer alternative to actual interaction. There's no risk that you'll say something you regret if a show is doing all the talking.

I also got some really pretty golden hour photos that I'm not sharing with y'all because they're too near where I live. Imagine if the sky itself could paint city walls and windows with pastels in different shades of blue, creating an ephemeral mural of an impressionist skyscape.

Today I did some server work in the morning, then instead of gaming in the afternoon I opted to go out with an ebook (and a dog), sit on a park bench and enjoy the weather, since it was the only warm/sunny day for a few weeks. There were many strangers out too, some interactions were lovely and heartful, others were conflicty but short. But I went out a few more times, while the weather allowed.

And this all sounds normal and unexciting. But it's not, for me. I've done a lot of work to get to the point where I can have a day like that, and I'm really proud of that. I'm looking forward to more days like it!

So, I always knew that I liked livestreams/podcasts/reruns because having a human voice in the room mitigated loneliness. Coming to terms that there's more to it, though.

Parasocial media feels safe, controllable, predictable. Like reaching for an instant meal instead of making something from fresh ingredients.
There's been this temptation whenever an interaction wasn't going my way, to withdraw, go home, and listen to the artificial voices instead.

I'm not planning to stop consuming media anytime soon (nothing wrong with instant meals in moderation), but I am making an effort to notice why I crave them - and reach out to living creatures more often.

@sirwumpus One thing you can do is have a boilerplate cover letter - a few anecdotes that showcase your skills, some generic language about your values. And just lego a response together, so you don't waste time personalizing each letter. And you can still go full essay mode when it's an employer you care about. :reply_discouraged:
