@kim_harding@mastodon.scot I've been writing a blogpost in the last couple of days about the nightmare I had getting any 'cloud' deployed when I was working in the Home Office (actually, for HMPO - passports) way back in 2014. The amount of wasted time (for me and the team of mostly contractors that I was working with), as well as outside agencies that ended up delivering nothing, was utterly ridiculous

  1. Always use a firewall
  2. Packets: check everything in the firewall
  3. Seriously, you need a firewall
  4. TCP has the evil flag - firewalls should refuse it
  5. Networks of firewalls - firewallception
  6. Data carries viruses - ban that stuff
  7. Physical infrastructure? Dangerous - a good backhoe will help keep it secure!

I had a 2nd interview on Friday May 1st - a tech-test. Not only did it go well, it was also an actually useful tech-discussion that they, and I, could *both* get something useful from.

Here's my write-up about it: https://alister.github.io/blog/2026/good-tech-test-interview/

@combatwombat I appreciate that you are just trolling, but it's certainly based on K&R with top-level functions (and in PHP, classes) on a new line, with calls and structures on the same line - like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indentation_style#K&R suggests As for the PSR, the coding standards of PER-CS, as well as the older PSR-12 & PSR-2 versions are themselves very much based on previous standards like PEAR and before it, the Horde coding standards, which between them go back to the 1990s. So if you don't want to use that style for your own code - that is entirely up to you, the PHP runtime doesn't care. Your colleagues would.

@Tideways@phpc.social You mention (rightly) a couple of times that you need to access Opcache status et al, and control it through Apache or (nginx/)PHP-FPM. I'd also add that https://github.com/gordalina/cachetool can interact with opcache, apcu and the filestat cache from the command line (over fast-cgi to PHP-FPM) to get stats, and deal with cached files/data. It's a very handy tool to see what is going on, and to help with optimisations.

I'm a (back-end oriented) developer, specialising in #PHP & #Symfony - especially Code-quality/System-Optimisation, and I'm looking for a Tech-Lead/Staff-Engineer or Senior Developer role.

PHP has been my language of choice since 1999, with Symfony for the last 10 yrs. Writing quality, well structured new code, improving what is already there, and helping junior developers become great senior devs is what excites me the most.
