@tuftyindigo@meow.social I agree that other fields are often in a much worse way, tooling-wise! I guess I was more thinking about the fact that the standard text editor and terminal emulator combo has stayed fairly static for decades. And where there have been features layered on top, I watch many software engineers completely bypass them, either because they require an upfront time investment to set up and they don't feel capable of taking that time, or just because they've learnt one way to do something and now don't want to change it. Asking Claude if the tests pass is probably going to be slower than just having them auto run on save, but it doesn't have the upfront hurdle of having to figure out how to make that happen

I think this gets at the idea that a decent chunk of the popularity of LLMs among many software engineers is in some way a reaction to how terrible our tools are. We largely code like we're still using punched cards, so having something that'll handle the mechanics of making holes with minimal setup is always going to be attractive.

I’ve not seen many decisions from regulators about what making changing your mind ‘straightforward’ is, but generally footer links on all pages and communication, or contact details on other communication, seems to be enough.
