@remi@phpc.social @s_hulard@mamot.fr I disagree with this. It's not a workaround, it's intended. It comes from the same practice being applied to PHP packages, where we pull the source directly, but I still think it should be applied here too. It's a few Mb, but pulled and pulled again thousands of times it adds up and it's useless, since often they get packed inside stuff like Docker containers. If I need to read that, I can still go to the source and look at it.

@OndrejMirtes@phpc.social compared to the people that was forced to write assembly, yes we are! Hamilton landing the Apollo with kilobytes of memory, or even shuffling entire games in NES/Atari cartridges was one order of magnitude more clever of what we churn out today. Granted, we push out 5-10 order of magnitude MORE software, but surely not more clever or better. @gullevek@famichiki.jp

@afilina@phpc.social I routinely patrol our Percona Query Analytics at $dayJob for this exact reason, I often find slow queries with easy fixes... After years like that, my colleagues fixed a lot of stuff, and the other day they took a monster with 2 nested sub queries, simply split it in half (1 query + 1 query with IN(...)), and obtained a 90% reduction in load and execution time in the core query of their business line! It was glorious!

@tastapod @adredish still, it seems a "what's the question?" issue here: do I want to know if MS is doing a good job? Maybe, as a (paying?) end user, I definitely do not care and I just want a (very) reliable service. And that chart shows exactly that.

@klabauterjan@phpc.social @waterkip@defcon.social since it's a downgrade from 8.4 to 8.2, and since newest Laravel requires 8.3, that would be... messy 😅

@waterkip@defcon.social again: create-project does not consider a local composer.json because it expects to create a new one itself. As for the version problem, you need to require a lower Laravel version explicitly while invoking create-project.

@waterkip@defcon.social in your console recording, you created a composer.json with the platform settings, then you issued composer create-project.

That fails right away because it works only in an empty folder, it's a scaffolding command. What do you want to achieve, alongside forcing the PHP version?

In general, I would advise you to get a local dev environment with the right PHP version, not to fake it (use Docker, maybe?)

@waterkip@defcon.social @klabauterjan@phpc.social you did it wrong. create-project creates the composer.json file from scratch, you already created it. You could do the reverse, and run composer update again to check that all the needed versions are compatible with the required platform. But, in any case, having the correct runtime when working IMO is a hard requirement.

@brendt maybe composer could implement a "replacedBy" option, so that polyfills could declare themself out? Still required, but the SAT understand that it's no longer needed. It could also be useful when you want to migrate a library to different vendor/namespace..

@ramsey @brendt probably because it's idempotency on behavior, not content? Stripe does it to avoid double-charging for the same order/product, but the answer could very well be different (think timestamps, payment status)..

@scy this probably make sense for PHP because dependencies are shared. In Node, as an example, they are not, so no interference is normally possible.

@float13@masto.hackers.town @Gankra@toot.cat this is a mnemonic to distinguish covariance and contravariance, the two properties of arguments and return types of an inherited method signature. When you extend a class and its methods, you can widen the argument types (contravariance - think Animal VS Dog extends Animal) but only tighten the return type (covariance - Dog VS Animal)

Today I released #paraunit 2.8.0, with support for @phpunit@phpc.social 13, which was released earlier this month.

https://github.com/facile-it/paraunit/releases/tag/2.8.0

Luckily, it required nearly no code changes, but it was stopped by the same upgrade on the phpspec/prophecy ecosystem. In return it required little to no code changes!

Happy testing!

@galtzo@ruby.social I think that "rock and a hard place" is the situation in which the majority of us feels right now, and contributes to the overall scenario. I personally feel there too, and as a father I'm only a bit less crushed than @Crell@phpc.social probably only because my son old enough to start teaching him about things like these. My hope is that the bubble will burst soon, making the job market bounce (removing the hard place) and skirting the AI fad to only where it's really useful.
