While the hardware probably wasn't like yours, I once came across a situation where a certain desktop would packet storm a TP-link switch every 1-2 months. It was always the same 'nothing works' call from the mom&pop shop. The problem went away when we added a separate network card into that machine and disabled the motherboard's. Technically, I don't think a switch should be overwhelmed like that but I have empirical experience that it can happen.

@BuyFromEU The sad fact is that an average consumer will always use what's easy to get into, not what's morally or technically superior. We are not selling this idea for technology enthusiasts who already understand the problem, but to a person who has absolutely no idea what these services even do technically, they're just the bright colored icon that let you do various things. Then there's the whole matter of selling the idea that it's not good if you're being spied upon. My mom is a good example. She has various services on her tabled and she uses them daily, but she just won't understand what's bad about if a technology giant analyses all her communications. She will never be able to comprehend the core issue because it's all space magic when explained even with layman's terms. Yet my mom is exactly the type that the campaigns to switch to European and trustworthy companies should be aimed for. It's however a tough sale to say she should start paying for them.

@mlanger@mastodon.world I never intended to directly claim you told to people to delete Youtube and I'm sorry for any confusion, but in general there's a lot of 'delete your youtube, instagram etc. accounts, content producers should take their stuff down' type of mentality here on Fediverse, sometimes to a degree of suggesting boycotting content producers unless they leave the mass market social media sites. And for this I just hope people would understand the realities and cherish the ones that actually have presence here as well and not chase them away.

@mlanger@mastodon.world I don't think a lot of content producers really use any of the mainstream social medias in the first place in a sense that a random consumer would. From what I've seen with the ones I follow, a lot of them started with Youtube or Instagram, then went onto creator fair pay streaming services, but their main existence is still in the old place as that's where the lion's share of the audience is and they'll happy eating the Youtube advertising shit pie for as long as they don't come to the independent streaming sites. I just had to comment the general idea of 'delete your account from evil corporation sites' as for people whose income depends on it, being on Mastodon or similar open place alone isn't going to put food on the table.

@xgranade@wandering.shop I don't post there personally, but if you're a maker of anything that's really fringe, the chances are that for example on Mastodon you'll connect with maybe 1 or 2 people and then some people who reply 'cool' to your cool things but have no idea what's truly cool about it. It's a sad reality of needing the huge mass of users to find the very few who are interested in that specific fringe topic, a bit like in the web's early days where the small town single hobbyist finally found others online. I'm not for Meta or any of the other big companies, but at the same time I know selling Fediverse for example to such people is pretty futile. Some of them try it, post for a year or two, have absolutely no fruitful contacts and then just leave. It's easier if you're about some topic that's already popular around here.

@KimSJ People also think the early teens don't get to hear about sex any other way, the problem is that the 'knowledge' they get from rumours is usually wildly wrong and leads to teen pregnancies or STDs. I remember all the stuff that used to float around when I was in my early teens and we do have somewhat decent sex ed at schools, but event that didn't stop all the misconceptions. I can only imagine how it's like in a total purity environment. Every excuse I've heard about banning sex had has always been really bad, often to a degree where I believe the person expressing the opinion should've probably received some too.

@alice Makes me so angry every time any kind of sex ed gets gate kept, especially stuff like you're not faulty if a girl gets crushes on other girls. I so wish I had had access to such knowledge in the early days of my very confused puberty.
