I am wary of the "porn" label because it is loaded with so many different meanings.

The "sexual content" meaning gets most of the shouting in ways that suggest somebody is really saying "I don't do this!"

It also gets tangled with the "think of the children" mob.

The big danger is the industrial production which is saturated, management and finance and creation, with treating people as things.

Compared to that, is porn really anything special?

@peter@thepit.social There's a YouTube video from LBC, this morning, which is an interview with Pastor Mark Burns. He could be right about it being a good thing to put up a statue while somebody is alive to enjoy it. But so much of what he claims is questionable. It all feels very American. Modern technology does mean we can produce a statue rapidly, but we don't know how long it will last.

A lot of people seem never to have noticed what light reflecting off a video/computer screen — not obvious glare — can do to the brightness range you can see. This was one reason why the TV test card was broadcast.

The analogue TV signals were being turned into images by hardware that wasn't close to stable, by today's standards.

And the room lights were a very different colour to sunlight.

Digital TV and video still need properly setting for where they are being used. I can't remember the last time I saw a good test card being used.

There is a trap. TV standards began in a world that was "white Caucasian". That's the skin tones that the human face on the Test Card uses. If you're creating video you need to get results right for the real face.

I bought a very cheap hardback notebook from B&M — size A6 "Tiger" brand — and the paper shows no bleed-through. Lined paper so maybe not for everyone, but I can use it to practise. I know people who do Journalling have strong opinions. They wouldn't be seen dead in a B&M shop, it's too ordinary.

Adverts will always be based on the best possible results.. I checked with a search, and the headline lifespan for the product varied from 10 years to 40 years. The advert I heard on TV didn't give any number.

Was even 10 years optimistic? Or are all adverts cpn tricks?

I now have a fountain pen which works, Jinhao brand. It comes out of China, looks nice, and I can write with it. My schoolteachers used to say rude things about my hand-writing, never seemed able to teach about it, and then insisted I use a fountain pen in exams.

This is the glorious past that some politicians shout about.

@EUCommission Stories such as this one make me wonder about reports I have seen on the situation in Moldavia. It was talking of an instant change and neither this nor BREXIT have been instant. Some bits of the Moldavia situation may be happening quickly. The talk was of reversing a boundary change that came at the end of WW2 and that feels different.

@cstross "Broadest audience possible” is tricky set to define. For books, those low-skill readers can no more be counted than people without a TV for the TV audiences. I know I over- simplify, but it's one of the basic mistakes in statistics, like taking a sample of men and thinking it tells you something about women. It's a weakness Desmond Morris pointed out in"The Naked Ape”. Back in the 1960s the psychologists and psychiatrists took their data for human behaviour from abnormal cases. He didn't notice his observations were tainted by the abnormalities of zoos, and freely uses the "alpha male". Yeah, this all ends up with the management echelon in advertising — all sales and no creation.

@dezon @EUCommission Parents AND Teachers. My own experience was a long time ago before any microprocessor and we could see the world changing. I don't expect today's politicians to be any better at coping with change than they were then. Politicians don't have a high standard to live up to, and so many fail. Why should we trust you?

@BBCRD@social.bbc Read the report you linked to. There's a general problem for the British News Media. They may not always be liars, but that's the way to bet. The current style I see on Twitter struggles to be more than clickbait. The news page and the social media entry amounts to a repeated headline. The alleged AI driving an algorithm might make that work, but can it work for the Fediverse? It's not the same as the liar problem, but get on to a phone screen and what space do you have? It's not a TV or a newspaper or a computer monitor but it changes how you communicate with the user. The details and differences matter.

It may also be that you have the wrong beans but the cheaper beans are grown for the American Market. Changing to a different variety is expensive for the farmer — a several-year production gap.

@drmaddkap@meow.social The piece starts with "22 meters wide" and so I'd stick with a linear measurement. OK, I don't expect the journalist to do mental arithmetic, but "70 feet" is good enough. Using penguins is just being silly, and I don't expect that 22 meters to be exact. I'd use something my readers would have some clue about, like the width of a truck.
