@rhelune@todon.eu Home cooking means that you can take care of the quality of every ingredient and of every stage of production.
When we eat out, usually at lunchtime when travelling, we try something I don’t do at home. Recently, deep-fried maitake, which was wonderful.
There are certain categories of food that my wife now refuses to eat when we are out, particularly pasta, because the quality of the ingredients, the quantity, and the balance of the seasoning can rarely match what we make at home.
I am no master chef. I simply care about taste and the eating experience. I have always argued that a necessity should be a pleasure. If you approach food with pleasure in mind, what does time matter? Preparation is part of the pleasurable experience.

@veronica@explains.social The idea that “AI can do all that” is false. It cannot produce anything that is accurate, beyond the simplest levels of understanding. Try using AI search in a subject you know well. In my recent experience, AI “summaries” provided by search engines have misidentified the instrument played by a noted classical musician and have actively prevented me from finding a recipe I was looking for. If I want to find anything on Wikipedia, I now turn to the German and French language sites, which have greater detail and tend to corroborate each other, rather than the frequently degraded English language pages. The idea that this poorly designed tool can create anything of value would be laughable, if not for the tremendous harm that it is doing to the environment, to politics, to society, and to human psychology. Humans have never invented anything worse than this decadence in a bottle, this genie of stupidity, AI.

By now, we all know that the Israeli authorities lie about everything. We also know that Ukraine has offered Israel’s help with defense in its conflict with Iran. Under Zelenskyy, Ukraine appears to be cozying up to Israel.

1930 was, as you know, an arbitrary date, indicating that the Israeli state is not a continuous occupation by a people. Supporting their ancestral right to a historical homeland is the same as supporting their ancestral removal of the US government and placing the modern state in indigenous hands. This would, no doubt, be an improvement, but hardly fair to the other ethnicities present on the landmass if they suddenly found themselves to be a disenfranchised and subjugated people.
Your work on Black history just makes me more disappointed that you cannot see the wrongness in the second of your original points.

@Spacehistory @Deglassco @blueorchestra I don’t know how you can argue that Israel has not been expansionist. There was no “Israeli” population in Israel prior to its founding. It would be hard to find a current Israeli family that was living in Palestine prior to the 1930s. The borders have, during my lifetime, expanded frequently, and are in the process of doing so again.
Your second point is horrific. Leaving aside the issue of conflating political entity with ethnicity, which is, rightly, seen as racist, you accuse a scholar of racism of being racist. This, sir, is what is meant by white privilege. This is not two historians disagreeing. This is raw naked racism in action. Yours.
I know Dr Glassco does not need and probably will not welcome my response. Her silence is more dignified than my outrage. I hope, though, that you will reflect on what you have written here, and either try to be more sensitive to a history of oppression, or more openly proclaim your own allegiance to the same brand of white supremacy that occupies the White House.

I would go much further than taxation. There are too many dodges to avoid it. For example, Zuckerberg’s salary is $1, for the very reason of avoiding income tax. I question the entire system that permits such inequality and favour nationalization of industry and/or workers’ cooperatives, with active financial assistance to individuals and countries with the aim of eliminating poverty, and therefore extreme wealth, everywhere.

@wesdym@mastodon.social And I don’t think you understand mine. Two of the wealthiest economic regions in the world have these statistics. Capitalism allows 1% of people to hold 25% or more of the wealth, while others remain in poverty. That, and I’ll say it again, *policy decision* is the source of the shame. “Catching up” is an equivalent to “trickle down”, an excuse for the policy that permits the inequality.
Try looking up the percentage of GDP that went into the Marshall Plan. The funds exist for greater equality and the ending of poverty. Wealthy governments choose not to. This is the shame.

The UN is useful in the face of all aggression, or it serves only to legitimize aggression by the US and its partners.

@ckd @yetiinabox Tomatoes are an everyday part of fruit salads in parts of China. They are also used like strawberries in cakes. Local people love the way that foreigners react. I never got used to tomatoes and whipped cream, but found the fruit salad experience to be interesting.
I love the original post, too. As a very tall foreigner, I know what it’s like when people choose to be kind.
