Turns out accountability is a somewhat effective antidote to bullshit.

And many blogs will have their own lists of other blogs, so you can often discover other new things by exploring (and in the process, discover why it is that the Web was called the World Wide *Web*).

@farbel @mattblaze You'd hope so, but costs aren't always awarded (and typically there's a high bar to clear to get them awarded). I'll have to leave it to someone with an appropriate legal background to advise what his chances are of being awarded costs in a federal criminal case. I wouldn't be very optimistic about it though.

@jmax @Malfunct @rlcw Pretty much. The buyer just managed to sound intimidating enough when threatening to go to court that the seller wasn't sure. He spent a full hour chatting to the bot in what could only be a deliberate attempt to trick it into offering a "discount code" and then pasted it into the order comments demanding it be honoured. Not sure if he's cooked enough to believe he has a leg to stand on, or if he was hoping he could bravado his way through if he sounded authoritative enough.

I can't remember exactly how it worked, but trolls were abusing it heavily. Hopefully they've fixed it.

@painting_squirrel @greene There's a statistician called Hans Rosling that has given a TED talk on how live expectancy and child mortality rates feed into family size - long story short, the more likely kids are to live the smaller families get. I always quite liked that fact because it meant that there was no conflict between helping people live longer, healther lives and addressing overpopulation. I certainly hope that MAGAts haven't looked at that same insight and drawn a much darker conclusion.

Convenience should not be the only consideration, not when technology has the power to shape ourselves and our society. Online communities supported directly by the users they serve rather than by those users being indirectly monetized. And sure, those communities are still subject to local laws, but international players without jurisdiction aren't likely to have much influence.

Historically, a lot of people have been uncomfortable with the amount of data collected on them by Facebook / Google / Twitter but tolerated it because they don't know what to do about it. When protecting the privacy of your data just requires moving to another instance - same UI, same experience, just less spying - that actually becomes a much easier sell than abandoning your entire social graph.

@fiercemilder@mastodon.ie One saving grace here is that while it might slow new sign ups on existing services, I can't see the people who've already bothered to get themselves an account migrating into the Google version. Add that to the major virtue of federation being the ability to find a community where you best fit (the local timeline on the Gmail instance would be completely useless) and an attempt at Embrace, Extend, Extinguish could potentially backfire (Embrace, Exodus, Oopsie).
