@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social "Eight Megs And Constantly Swapping" certainly would fit the Game Boy architecture.

  • Eight Megs: Same size as Densha de Go 2, the biggest licensed Game Boy game.
  • Constantly Swapping: MBC5 bank switching. The Game Boy looks at ROM through a 16 KiB window at address range $4000-$7FFF.

I made a test ROM for the Oeka Kids drawing tablet for Famicom based on the description at NESdev Wiki. I had someone with a tablet try it.

It didn't work.

The tablet's slow microcontroller requires a lot of waiting in the read routine. The MCU turned out to be so slow that reading a pen position took 67 scanlines, or one-fourth of an NTSC frame. Neither Mesen nor FCEUX modeled this slowness.

It took three revisions before I had a read routine I was happy with. All for a silly little Anpanman licensed game.

Once I let the user map keyboard and joystick presses to emulated buttons, save settings, and save SRAM, I called Family Size VM feature-complete.

Sumit Khanna reports that the cost per gigabyte of memory for desktop computers has had no net improvement since 2009. The present RAM shortage has erased a decade and a half of gains. How do we get application developers to use more efficient frameworks?

@flesh @andrewt I don't know what counts as a "reasonable platform" given that Microsoft, Apple, and the free desktop community haven't agreed on a GUI API other than the Web.

@andrewt I think one of the reasons that Electron caught on as opposed to Tauri's approach of using the system HTML renderer is that Apple WebKit was missing so much compared to Blink and Gecko. @andrewt JVM was owned by Oracle since 2010, and the ASF felt frustrated about inability to license the Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK) for Harmony. Mono's reimplementation of .NET Windows Forms always felt janky and crash-prone in my experience as a user. I've seen WebAssembly as a successor to the JVM, except less opinionated about a particular object-oriented paradigm and not under encumbrance of One Rich American Called Larry Ellison. #java #dotnet #wasm

@andrewt What's less bad: an application built as a Chromium instance, or a native application that ends up unavailable to most users because Linux and Windows don't implement the Cocoa API of macOS?

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer Under this definition, a video game distributed as free software would indeed be as legitimate and sustainable as any ball sport. The hard part is getting such a game to be popular enough to bring in viewers, especially given how big the advertising budgets are for proprietary games and how allergic the major consoles are to free software.

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer StepMania appears to be a sport since (I think) 2023 now that DDR essential patents have expired. (The StepManiaX team would know better than I.) It remains to be seen whether Konami will behave like The Tetris Company by claiming copyright in those game elements not covered by any patent.

@RikerGoogling@mas.to Dance Dance Revolution is esports. Sports aren't owned by someone. Anyone can start a baseball league without permission from any other entity. Esports, by contrast, operate at the pleasure of a game's publisher. Only the publisher is allowed to sell equipment to play a game, and the publisher has power to forbid broadcasting a competition. If Konami refuses to cooperate, then under current law in the United States, you are forbidden to start a DDR league until 2094. #esports #copyright
