Looks like Microsoft is building a data centre in the #Leeds area, at Skelton Grange. There's a campaign group against it: https://noleedsdatacentre.wordpress.com/
Their site has some recommended actions & petitions and links to their Insta/YT accounts.
Can anyone recommend an online form/survey builder that's less evil than google?

If anyone's interested, I discovered just under the soil and bits of sticks there's a strategically positioned tarp just above the top bin, designed to funnel rain water into it, which the hose then pipes to the bottom bin. And it seems to work well!

As people have pointed out, it's probably buried for stability in wind. I think being cut in half is probably to make it easier to pull out detritus and/or use it to fill a watering can for the top of the plot.

@LitteRatty I think the stability thing is probably right. The stream is at the bottom not that - it might just be so it's easier to reach in to fish out detritus and/or fill up a watering can for the top of the plot.

@Florapis Other people have pointed out it's probably to stop it getting blown about by wind
#gardening and #allotment fedi, I need help. We've taken on an allotment on slope with no running water supply except a nearby steam. A previous tenant has sawn a water butt in half and buried it at the top of the plot, with a hosepipe attached to the nozzle running to the bottom of the plot (part buried in the ground). There are a couple of plastic bins at the bottom I guess for collecting water from the other end of the hose.
Has anyone seen something like this? Why is it halved and buried?
