A common defense of the super rich is that they create jobs. It is just accepted. But we might consider it in more depth. The billionaires didn't actually conjour money from nothing so them not having it would mean it was somewhere else. And it could still be used to create jobs. So the number of jobs allowed to exist by billionaires should be compared to how many jobs would exist in various alternate controllers of that same money.

@gmh@mastodon.social @khleedril@cyberplace.social Sir Bernard was still coming in occasionally in the 2000s. You'd sometimes see him in the Tea Room. Here's a picture I took when The Sky At Night came to visit in 2007. The two of them filmed a bit to camera outside by the telescope and it started to rain. So Chris Lintott and I held umbrellas over them just out of shot.

Up in the dish it is slightly surreal. It is 76m across. Back in 2002 it was newly painted so was almost like being in a snow field. We were lucky enough to be allowed to climb up to the edge if we wanted. As you heave yourself up the rope the curve is constantly getting steeper. So you find yourself leaning forward. Then, as your head reaches level with the edge, you suddenly see the entire Cheshire plane far below you and you regret leaning forwards!

From between the old and new surfaces you have to climb up a vertical ladder to the working surface. You get a dramatic view of the focus tower looking straight up. If you look closely you can probably make out some radio astronomy receivers up in the focus tower that are pointing down.

You might be thinking that the bowl you could see there was the underside of the shiny white surface. But it is actually the underside of the original surface from 1957. When they upgraded the telescope in the 1970s they put a new surface, with a different curvature, above the old surface. The result is a big cavern between the "old" and "new" surfaces. Apologies for the blurry shot - blame my 2002 digital camera.

At the top of the lift you are still in the tower that rotates the dish in altitude (up/down). So you are still on a structure that has a floor that is always parallel to the ground. But you then have to step over onto this gantry that moves with the dish. Obviously you only do this when the dish is "parked" pointing upwards.

The telescope was originally designed in the 1950s when nothing quite like it had been built - it was the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world. It was designed by Charles Husband who was a bridge builder from Sheffield. So the structure has some elements of bridges to it.

My trip up the 76m diameter Lovell Telescope was in 2002 after a resurfacing. Here's us waiting for the lift to go up one of the towers. The two support towers were called green and red (that was the colour of the floors in them).

I once played a very brief game of cricket in the Lovell Telescope (after a resurface but before it got properly tuned) because we wanted to recreate a scene from The Dish. We used a tennis ball to avoid damage. The Chief Engineer was wicket keeper. I'm bowling.

As pointed out here https://c.im/@DrKathyChandler/116997653799347556 Norway has a wealth tax. Switzerland (not exactly known for being poor or anti capital) has a wealth tax. Not a wealth tax but perhaps surprising for British people is that the US taxes US citizens wherever they live, not just if they are in the US. Even if they were just born there. And they apply an "exit tax" to those wanting to renounce their citizenship that applies if you have a net worth over $2m or a high income.

For those who haven't really thought about "wealth taxes" before, you might be thinking up all the ways people might avoid it (with loopholes) or that it might cause rich people to run away. And yes, you want to make sure that loopholes (foreign ownership etc) aren't added or allowed to keep existing. The rich will bring up France having failed to implement a wealth tax properly. The think there is that they deliberately added loopholes. So it sank. Other countries/states have wealth taxes.

Note I'm very specifically talking about the meta topic of how we talk about wealth tax and how often people get distracted from actually enacting a wealth tax by being made to debate options. Another thing that acts to avoid enacting a wealth tax is shifting the discussion to optimising _other_ taxes. It seems emminently sensible to suggest you have to find the "right" answer before doing anything and to bring up all the other related issues. All this acts to keep the status quo.

It is interesting that the richest people often don't want others to know how much they have, and say that it'd be so difficult to set up systems to find that out, but also pay quite a bit of attention to things like The Sunday Time's Rich List to see where they rank.

The exact amount to tax the wealth of the super rich, and the level of wealth it should kick in at, matters less right now than doing *something*. Endless arguments about it being 1% , 2% or 5% etc or start above £10m, £100m, or £1b etc just act to stop any wealth tax from happening. And that works to keep the richest gaining an ever larger share of everything.

The funny thing is that I didn't choose my current estate agent. In fact I specifically avoided them because of various things I thought they did which seemed dodgy to me. But, they bought out the estate agent I went with. In fact they probably now control the majority of the area in which I live. So they now probably get to set "market" rents to whatever they want. There isn't really a "market".

Looks as though the law now says they are supposed to give me two months notice about rent increases. It'll be interesting to see if they produce a back dated letter claiming to have given me notice and say it is my issue that I never received it. The first I know about the increase is them very promptly chasing me up for "arrears". Funny how they can be very prompt when they want to be but take months for anything else.

The estate agent contacted me to tell me I hadn't paid my rent. Except I had. The amount they were after was an odd amount. It turns out they've increased my rent by 6.7% but I hadn't received any notice warning me about that. Hmm. :(

We all know Reform UK is an _English_ Imperialist company so follows long traditions of subjugation. When I see something like https://thenoisyroom.com/ I immediately start thinking about the problems. It seems very much from the perspective of there bring *one* public. That a "national poll" applies across many different countries. In all likelihood most of the world would be presented with US polls as what is "normal". Then there's the big owned platforms inevitably skewing the presented numbers for their owner's wishes. We can't just hope that "statistically representative" happens. :(

@RuthSalter@mastodon.scot They really really didn't want to examine their own thoughts and each of them shut down the conversation. I feel this small fraction of people are largely beyond reach. There are other Reform voters who aren't and, as the article suggests, seem to have very different views to Reform/Farage on many topics but see them as "different". There's a much bigger group (in the 350 people who's doors I knocked on) who are worried about Reform and feel abandoned by Labour.

These people couldn't listen but also accused me of "not listening" when I tried to ask them questions about what they thought. I realised they really meant I wasn't actively agreeing with them but framing it as me not listening was how they could frame it that I was doing them wrong. These people proactively insisted I'd call them racist.

@RuthSalter@mastodon.scot Over the autumn winter I went out knocking on doors of my neighbours with a petition to tax the super rich. But, as we all know petitions have little chance, a big part was encouraging people to talk about the world in as open and friendly a way as I could with the bandwidth talking in person allows over text-based docisl media. I let people talk as long as they wanted. Some talked for several hours. There's a lot of isolation.

This is one of the fish and chip restaurants near me. It was the original Harry Ramsdens (before they became a big, not great, chain). This resturant once described itself as the largest fish and chip shop in the world. It is now the Wetherby Whaler but still retains the grand, over-the-top, chandeliers. There is also a man who plays piano versions of hits of the day whilst you eat your chip butties.

What I want is healthy democracy. I want rid of authoritarians. I want us to move away from fossil fuels and plastics. I want us to tackle the climate crisis instead of pretending it doesn't exist. I want less waste. I want a future that is positive. I want people to have less stress and more time for living. I want everyone to have enough food and not be lacking the basics. I want people to be able to make more art, do stuff in their communities, and grow/learn as people.
