@AlanHicksLondon I read the translation (which seemed good) and tbh I think his optimism is misplaced, the European center left seems to be pandering to the right and the center seems intent on austerity which will lead to people struggling even more, this dynamic is perfect for fascist populism. On the other side of the equation the US has proven that money not only talks, but can buy countries. And the rich are not only motivated, but now see that putting their money towards oligarchy is good for them. The European left is weak and indecisive, and has very little initiative to do anything, they’re mostly intent on yelling at others. So unless there is a new groundswell… I’m afraid we’re at the beginning of a fucking terrible decade.

@julian@social.synesthesia.co.uk yeah, I believe the disengagement mechanism in burnout is the mind defending itself. And in my experience, the sooner you address signs of burnout the faster is the recovery and the fewer long term effects. Now I have chronic migraines, but before I had stress induced migraines and I used to joke that migraines were the way my body could tell me: “Hey! You! You don’t realize it, but you’re not ok, go figure out why you’re sad”

This mentality is something I often see in quite junior people who seem to emulate what they think is “cool”. That is a terrible start as a dev because your learning is severely inhibited and you’re often an absolute party pooper for folks trying to make great stuff. And so you might end up pushing away the people that could really help you become great. And if you don’t snap out of it… 😬

A conversation today reminded me of something: I have come to see speaking badly about ones users as a sign of a bad programmer.

Disengagement, cynicism, callousness, suspicion… these things make bad software.

Simultaneously our industry has elevated these traits as signs of “rationality”.

Caring, empathy, curiosity, engagement, learning, compassion… these things make good software.

And they don’t get the hype they deserve.

Aside, but important: in my experience, disengagement especially, but also to some extent the others, are often an early warning sign of burnout. So if you feel you’re slipping into that, maybe get someone you can talk to, there might be more going on than you realize.

@corneil @turtlesec it wasn’t on election security unfortunately. It was on evaluating EML (Election Markup Language) for the Norwegian electoral system, back in 2005. So I wrote a distributed system based on the Norwegian laws and regulations, and used EML for data transfer. But it meant studying the laws and regulations so I became above average interested in the topic.

I guess I should do an #introduction.

I’m a Norwegian C++ programmer specializing in application security in C++. I co-founded a small consultancy/training company called @turtlesec@mastodon.social. We are programmers with a side interest in different aspects of security.

I wrote my master’s thesis on the Norwegian electoral system, so I tend to have opinions on election security.

I have tried to improve diversity and inclusion in the C++ community with varying degrees of success.
