I'm still amazed and loving the bookmark feature in Mastodon. I finally have a chance to go back and look at some things and to clear out some bookmarks. Often I'll look at things on my phone and for one reason or another I can't play a video or download a file as of yet. Maybe it's something I want to examine more closely on my laptop and not my phone or tablet. The bookmark is such a no brainer, I'm surprised that it's not built into other social media.

For the longest time we would have the same news, the same TV channels, the same movies... All of it allowed for Monday morning discussions around the break room. Now everyone thinks their social media consumption is the same as everyone else's but it's not as you say. We have placed a higher barrier on shared experience.

There's already many people who've turned their emotional energies into the generative LLM relationships. There is no risk in them and no emotional growth. What's sad is that the way it's planned for many businesses the humans will be one among countless AI agents. The chance for social interaction will greatly drop.

All have tainted beliefs based on how their Sunday School taught them and what brand of preaching took place before them. I could see some sects believing in a hierarchy of the souls in heaven. There's some who believe that all souls must linger in purgatory until the 2nd coming to be judged only then.

My take away was that it made code, quickly tested it, and if it worked would hand it over. If it didn't work, the LLM made new code until it passed the unseen test. It was LLMs version of brute forcing the password to an online account. No thought was ever involved. And yes, what's handed over appears to work, for now.

Last time I saw such positive discussion around disagreements was on hobby subreddits. Even at that, most of what comes across my curated feed is an affirmation of my beliefs. Have I supplanted an algorithm with my own biased follows? Or have I just made a calm spot that's not aggravating me with fake emotions? Could I have made my own echo chamber that doesn't challenge my beliefs? 2/2

I get that algorithms are designed to keep showing you what you've looked at before and whatever has kept your eyeballs the longest & coming back for more. That's how echo chambers grow.

I worry because I follow many accounts that believe the same things that I do on the Fediverse, that I have developed my own echo chamber of like minded folk.

Maybe the difference lies in that when I see a disagreement 80% of the time it's handled amicably. For other social media this isn't the case. 1/

@commonst Yep. Those programs are cheaper for insurance. Part of me wonders about poisoning the data. I've done it in Facebook and LinkedIn and for Google. Start a few months of therapy revealing more about the wrong doings of your company and the extraordinary lengths you have to take to protect yourself. Then get into a lawsuit with the company? At the very least the LLM trained on the data will talk poorly about your company.

One of the big reasons I would never trust an online site or an app to manage my mental health. Transcripts of a woman's therapy sessions were pulled up by her employer during a court trial. WTF!! This goes double for any LLM based therapy app. Talkspace has been pushed in many social media ads and on streaming services with ads. This is scuzzy.

A friend's father-in-law had a heart attack and they told the doctor it was the first time. Turns out he'd had one a decade earlier and told no one. His kids were upset in that they never knew the family had a history of heart disease. Their doctors never had it on their radar as something to prevent.

@celesteh It's crazy how effective altruism gave us groups teaching doctors in remote communities how to fix cleft pallets instead of funding foreign doctors in traveling all over. (Actually a good thing.) To it morphing into the bull crap of not investing in saving the planet (because in their mind it's doomed) and pouring money into what they believe will help humanity after the downfall, such as AI. Crazy thinking.

@caten@mathstodon.xyz I took a look and I don't see a quick way to turn it off inside of settings. There is a whole page about creating overrides. Maybe a script there can help. Within about:config you can search for https and look for dom.security.https_only_mode_ever_enabled. Try turning the value to false. Restart. It should give you the options in settings to turn it off and on as you wish.

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange About the time routers began to give parental rights in the 00s The Onion did a joke piece about all of the high school kids using an obscure plumbing website thread to share URLs, pictures, meetup times, and general shenanigans. They'd taken it from real life and had made the story more insane. But yes, the whole internet lock down with age verification is not for the kids. Kids will find a way to get what they want to see and do.

@Zumbador It's good to know if you fit a classification. Identifying where you fall on the spectrum is stress relieving. It gives you information that can help. I have a freind who states, "Brains will be brains." It takes away the stigma of issues. It gives a do-over if one is needed. It allows you to move on. Not to dwell but to learn. Her saying it shows she sees the problem. It diffuses the negative feelings over something. It's best said to someone else when they stress over something.

With the enshitification of search engines my top results would always have as the first few choices the most god awful, ad laden, poorly written sites you could imagine. I upped the memory and added a SSD one year after buying it. It's still going strong. It came with Linux Mint but for this machine I'm doing Pop Os. There's lots of companies up cycling business electronics on ebay. And so much cheaper than buying new. I paid $250 with shipping included some 10 yrs ago.

Oh, and Facebook is dead with many demographics. Wonder why you aren't seeing twenty somethings to your events? First they aren't on Facebook. Second the FB crappy algorithm hides your stuff. Advertisers know you don't put one ad into one newspaper. Getting the message out there doesn't work that way.

@hackaday@hackaday.social Back in 1999 I had a list of local dial up phone numbers for my service, Mindspring. When I'd hit a town I'd check to see what number was local. Hardest part was to put in the hotel's number to press to dial out and then to put in enough time for the dial tone to then appear before dialing. Some hotels required a lot of fiddling to get dialup in the room to work.

An American traveler in GB, or possibly he was on the continent, had an emergency in their hotel room. Geesh. I can't remember the particulars. Anyway he's on Twitter asking for the police and an ambulance. He never once picked up the phone to call the front desk. It went on for hours until someone else on Twitter called for him.

In fact, before PCs were affordable to most and as a stop gap between typewriters and the PC there were computers in the 80s that were collectively known as word processors. Glorified typewriters with little memory and with spell checking capabilities they wrote many a term paper back when.

@whybird @DrPen @Seetee I agree with this. I only want add that we got here because of the time when only a proprietary program could open certain file extensions. At least this is my reasoning. Adobe had pdf locked down and M$ Word had word file extensions locked in, etc. Breaking this habit will be hard.
