On this date in 1977, I entered the gates of HMS Raleigh, the initial entry training establishment, in Torpoint, Cornwall, to join the Royal Navy.
15th March that year was a Tuesday. The weather was wet and windy and the train between Exeter and Plymouth was delayed by several hours. There were quite a few fellow recruits on that train. We were all late arriving. Not a great start to my future career 😄

Wickold Pilecki allowed himself to be captured and interred in Aushwitz where he was able to report on and smuggle out information about what was going on in the camp.
