Part of the social contract in having good local/niche businesses is that you have to patronize them! Yes it might cost a bit more but if you can afford to, keep that money local or spend it with your favorite niche hobby. What you spend in money you will make up for in community and culture.

Is it bad when the LLMs have more pushback against DHH's racism than half of the Ruby community?
I can't help but love and also be a little sad about this @404mediaco@mastodon.social article. I love that this is happening, I would never want it to end. But at the same time, I live in the suburbs a few hundred miles away. Placing things on the internet gives them such spread in a way local events can't. Unfortunately the internet does have some tradeoffs (to put it very lightly) so I understand why the Luddites don't want to be featured.

@evan@cosocial.ca "it" is a little vague here. I've used AI code review tools which are better than nothing when I was the sole developer on a project at a startup. I've used tools like SonarQube and linters for static analysis. I think that in the end it works but I'm not sure it's worth the cost/trade-offs.

Thinking about High Modernism, Le Corbusier, and how the Bene Gesserit. I can't decide if they are a literary apotheosis of High Modernism or a synthesis of Humanism and High Modernism. Probably bc that's one of the themes of the last three books.

Finally read that essay by Dana Milibank about how politics has changed over the last 10 months that's supposed to be a sort of their soft relaunch of NOTUS in June. Frankly I'm not sure it's going to be anything more than a new home for neoliberal coverage driven out of the Washington Post. He seems to be clearly missing the point on how MAGA is demonizing and attacking trans folks. His sole mentioning of SCOTUS is the few times they have checked Trump instead of their massive deference.
I'm reading Seeing Like a State and they're talking about how last names came into use (to help enforce state control over citizens) and all I can think about DIDs and distributed identity.
I really hope Seeing Like a Platform touches on this 🤞

@tchambers@indieweb.social so I just finished reading Empire of AI and they talk A LOT about the cost in compute and time to train models. I think we're going to see one of two things in the next 3-5 years. Either the Open models just can't afford to spend to train like the major American AI labs are doing and the gap gradually widens again (scaling laws rule and if you can't scale 🤷). Or the other alternative, US firms blow their $$$ and time and don't get anywhere faster. Running faster is not a great plan!

@tchambers@indieweb.social I'm not that confident but I do think that there isn't much of "moat" around the models. If Chinese labs can distill more open models out of the big closed American labs they are probably always going to be just barely behind. At a certain point do the "breakthroughs" matter to people? Especially when the general public is already becoming AI weary??? I doubt it very much.

@carlrichell I'm not from Colorado but I do follow tech policy somewhat closely; it's my understanding that Colorado likes to view itself as one of the leaders in tech policy at the state level. I think it would be very helpful if you pointed at the carve outs for Open Source OSs and Apps and compared that to the state of CA AB1043 and the vagueness of who it applies towards as "Operating System Provider" and "covered app store". Clarity is better here IMO

@annaecook I actually saw someone working with LLMs make a really similar point just a few days ago. Like we as people have only so much mental capacity and the idea that we can just chug thru switching tasks bc an LLM is churning out code is laughably absurd.

@mekkaokereke @davidnjoku I totally understand that. There's also the Indian space program landing a lunar rover on the moon's south pole the other year. I do remember hearing about that one more than any of the other Chinese space missions though. The Chandrayaan Programme was also notable for how cheaply they did everything compared to what NASA does.

@danirabbit structurally there are two main mechanisms.
First as others have mentioned he should be removed from office with the 25th Amendment. (It should probably have already happened with all his cognitive tests he began about but...) If launching a genocidal war crime against 90 million people isn't grounds for removal nothing is.
Second, if orders are given, they are almost certainly illegal and should be ignored. That's why those Dem veterans cut the ad last year reminding officers.

@mahryekuh this reminds me of a comment I saw once that compared back-end development as "easy mode" since you know your environment and its constraints are laid out for you ahead of time. Compared to the front-end where you are programing where everyone can see you fail in an unknown environment. You can decide which one is harder

@baldur@toot.cafe non algorithmic feeds can be wild because my BSky is currently talking about how there is also a fervent knee jerk anti AI stance that refuses to concede any ground that LLMs might be improving. Which is not the same as saying criticism isn't valid just that a lot of the criticism these days is completely missing the mark and turning people off from anti AI (really just LLM) sentiment.
