@sundogplanets@mastodon.social @dar@mastoart.social So this may be legit reason for concern, and certainly needs much more study, but except for very rapid environmental effects, this is still likely a tiny drop in the bucket. Plus, it seem like a lot of the alarm has much to do with the opinions that Musk is a billionaire/trillionaire, Nazi, racist, asshole (an opinion that I absolutely share). But science that comes from seeking a foregone conclusion is rarely good science. I want to see more before we panic.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social @dar@mastoart.social Aluminum, no, but metallic iron and nickel are fairly common, and aluminum is a minor part in oxides, compounds, or encapsulations. They might well be more common it lunar meteorites, since that's common on the surface, and in certain geologic periods, lunar meteorites may have been MUCH more common due to surface bombardment or major impacts. And again, every day since the Earth was formed.

@dar@mastoart.social @sundogplanets@mastodon.social Concern is not completely invalid, but to put it in perspective, the Earth is estimated to be hit within 15,000 to 40,000 pounds of meteors every year, and presumably it's been that much (or often much more) every year since the planet existed. Speed of entry is higher as well, which might result in greater vaporization. You've always been breathing meteorite metal and dust.

But the button on our microwave seems to work perfectly. Moisture sensor instead of straight timer. (Yeah, love Technology Connections, and had already watched this one. I'm just the kind of nerd to love his stuff.)

Just curious, are there any extinct species of ants larger than any of our surviving ones? It seems like, given the size of some other terrestrial arthropods (tarantulas, giant beetles, coconut crabs, to name a few) that much, much larger ants might at least be POSSIBLE. @futurebird@sauropods.win @Jaicup@mindly.social

@joshsutphin Fascinating project. Thanks for sharing. Based on my old 80s BBS days, where some of the BBS's in Seattle were running light weight but fairly sophisticated discussion platforms running on IBM PC/XT machines, and even 8-bit platforms through dial-up, I keep thinking about the discussion side of this. These were single user systems, but seems like you could do multiuser and still keep them light enough to run on a PI board.

@xgranade I'm so sorry this happened to you, or anyone for that matter. Even as the current administration shows signs of crumbling, we keep sliding further into a fascist surveillance state, rights and protections being peeled back like an onion, all in the name of "public safety," and I see it everywhere I look. Getting things to stop isn't enough. We need to be prepared to knock things down and rebuild from scratch.

@curiousicae @dan Wow. Did not know it was being used to threat those. So sorry about your malady. Post covid? I've been following science Youtuber Physics Girl who has been mostly bedridden for over three years at this point with similar symptoms. Brain fog, weakness, fatigue, inability to tolerate light or noise. She managed to shoot and post a new science video a few weeks ago, but the backlash sent her right back to bedrest. It's been horrific to see someone so vital laid so low.

@curiousicae @dan And just to be clear, I'm taking it for diabetes, not weight loss (though I've gotten that as a positive side effect). I really don't understand the people who take this for cosmetic weight loss. Too many disruptive side effects to be one of the "beautiful people."

@curiousicae @dan Yeah, that's a possibility. But getting adjusted to Ozempic has been a years long and to some extent ongoing process. And I'm not eager to start that over, or start injecting unregulated off-brand who-knows-what into myself every day. No I'm no great fan of Novo either, but staying alive and fairly healthy isn't something I want to cut corners on. The system is broke. Capitalism is broke. Novo is just a symptom.
