@adub@beige.party Yes, this is all because the corporations and super wealthy have persuaded both sides of politics that the role of government is to promote their capacity to make even more obscene profits and pay less taxes rather than serving the people who actually vote for them. I think it is time for governments to be banned from engaging with industry lobbyists. It is time to raise the corporate tax rate to well above the current top marginal rate for workers, and to introduce a Wealth Tax as well.

@John@fairdinkum.one Tariffs are an easy tax for tRump. People don't declare it on the statement to the IRS. It is two or three steps removed from the final payer - the consumer. And the generalized notion of INFLATION can be blamed for price rises. Australians do not pay this tax - Americans do.

I support the Palestinian people but I am not a supporter of Hamas - that is a local political issue about which I can do nothing. But I can support the Palestinian people and, at the same time, deplore that the IDF has been doing to them at the behest of the political leadership of Israel.

Woodsied has been playing a long game in its Browse Basin Gas Project. It had no hope under existing laws so it has quietly set about influencing government into nobbling the approval process by degrading environmental protection laws and processes and ultimately empowering the Minister to make a decision in their favour if all else fails. Well done.

If any other country was doing what the American backed State of Israel is doing in Lebanon there would be a huge international outcry of condemnation and they would be declared a rogue state.

It is not difficult to anticipate the future for Lebanon - just look at the Palestinian territories.

Australia's Central Bank has just hit consumers again with an interest rate hike - on top of the fuel price hike they are all having to adjust to the copnsequences of. The ABC News Headline of the story says

"The RBA is risking a recession by raising interest rates but feels there's nothing else it can do"

I say the reason it feels there is nothing else to do is that it is reading from the wrong economic textbook. The RBA has been stifling our economy for too long.

In Australia, there is a lot of media HYPE about rorting of our National Disability Insurance Scheme which provides services to many people with all kinds of disabilities that are intended to improve their quality of life and ability to engage in work and community activities.

You can easily get the impression that it is the clients who are rorting the system, when in fact it is unregistered and unregulated service-providers doing the rorting. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-05-05/ndis-fraud-tactics-popping-up-around-australia/106622490

Western Australia's parliament is in the control of Labor in both houses - so it can pass whatever legislation it chooses. But they have stuffed this procedural legislation that has no ideological pressure one way or the other and they stand alone in not sharing data across jurisdictions. In the May ANUpoll "The Greens top the poll as the most hated party, with 25.6 per cent of respondents reporting a strong dislike of the party compared to One Nation at 24.2 per cent."

While the Greens occupy the right existential space for my way of thinking about Politics, they have clearly played "the game" of politics badly in recenty years and now the results of that are beginning to show.

Meanwhile, Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party seems to be thriving.

The Australian political discourse is all focussed on how far the Libs have drifted to the right - but Albo's stance on the Gas Tax, and Butler's action slashing the NDIS to bits would make Scomo proud - straight out of the neoliberal play book. This is not a government of the left by any of the usual measures.

Chevron's GM Kynan Scarr says: "Across both facilities [at the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects] we're paying around $1.8 billion a year to operate and maintain these facilities." He should have gone on to say that all this is reimbursed by the price they charge their customers for the gas and that their taxes are based on profits, not the amount of the running costs.

Maybe its time for the Federal Government to offer funding to LGAs to establish park-home villages that will not be subject to new owners buying up and evicting tenants - month-by-month tenancy with a ban on no-fault evictions.

"Social media screening of visa applicants would be ramped up and migrants who breach Australian values would be deported under a Coalition government proposal."

The Coalition is looking more and more like the madness of MAGA and Trump. Why do they want to go there?

I can't fathom what is so "unexpected" about the rise of solar. Rooftop solar take up by Australians ad their own expense was globally high and state generators have not reacted quickly enough to the changing role of the poles and wires. Politicians have been abysmally slow in adjusting policy settings to encourage all of this and yet we have South Australia at almost 100% renewables for electricity generation with energy prices plummeting. That changeover is happening.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-13/martin-green-role-in-solar-power-unstoppable-rise/106499018

@ScottishGreens The goal of the neoliberal lie that the private sector will always be more efficient and cost-effective than the public sector is to eliminate the public sector, especially if the private sector is deregulated. We have played along with this novelty long enough now for the lie to be obvious. The public sector is more efficient and cost effective in doing government business, and a strong public sector is essential for the proper regulation of the Private sector.

What's causing the Greek yoghurt shortage in Australian supermarkets.
Easy easy. Make your own peeps. A litre uht full cream milk, couple heaped tablespoons powdered full cream milk. Warm up to 38 degrees C, mix in a small portion of your previous yoghurt, and the put in thermal container with some boiling water - then wait a few hours.

So, AUKUS really means that when the US goes to war, Australia is automatically at war as well. Personnel, intelligence services, Pine Gap telecommunications - all are on action-stations in support of the US regime. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-06/australian-navy-personnel-on-us-submarine-that-sunk-iran-vessel/106423710
