@dandylover1@someplace.social there's a copy on winworld pc. After that they changed tack and made the short lived visual basic dos version, and then no more DOS based basics from MS

@dandylover1@someplace.social @tspivey@dragonscave.space I think you're right. I spent my teenage years on Quick Basic 4.5. I've installed PDS recently and it seems like the final version. There are commandline compilers in Qb45/PDS so maybe you can work out a way to use those with a modern editor.

@dandylover1@someplace.social @tspivey@dragonscave.space @dandylover1@someplace.social @tspivey@dragonscave.space QuickBasic isn't open sourced (yet? - I hope in future though, we got various DOSs) so a native version won't be forthcoming in the immediate future. From Linux (maybe WSL too) you can run Qb45 and it's successor PDS in DOSEMU including in console mode. At that point it's convoluted enough that I'd consider seeing if FreeBasic suits you better, its multi platform, and has some level of QBasic compatibility. Since you're in it for the long term, I'd consider opening some tickets against QB64 about accessibility features, it's always worth asking even if stuff takes a long time.

@greg@icosahedron.website @moh_kohn@mastodon.scot benchmarks is definitely a good idea. I think I only got as far as "optimised images are smaller than no optimised" as a unit test. Tested the site a month later and every thumbnail had become a full size image.

Still it sounds like Zig Bun was alright - hopefully a fork survives. There are ways of using this stuff where you intervene and understand each chanre, mould it to the knowledge you learn get it to point you to references which you read and sanity check, ask questions and fix, fix, fix.... OR: Just fucking YOLO it like this, amazing stuff: pure cinema even.

@villares@ciberlandia.pt I'd already forgotten my glasses so concentration was out a bit, by the time I went upstairs and found I didn't have internet I needed to update my C.V. I decided the trip was a bust. Might drop them a mail though. There's a difference between the noise of say - kids in a library, vs someone making an incredibly boring long business call.

Uggh, who has offensively boring business teams calls in a library ?

Can't concentrate on my laptop because some guy is droning on about ROI and A/B tests.

I accept libraries aren't as quiet any more and people work in them, but this is a step too far.

@cwebber build many to throw away is the slop coding way. Like LLMs in general it can sometimes be useful, but used a lot of resources, even more if you are not careful. Still: port from one language to another is something they are at least fairly good for.

Whenever I travel on the train I look up projects being built across the world or not built in the UK.

Sorting out all the tracks near Croydon would sort out a big bottleneck, so like most rail projects in the UK for the last 100 years it's indefinitely paused", would be good to see it in my lifetime.

Non constant universe expansion (jerking: heh) - does this point at the big bang being a white hole.

On the other side, a black hole is not consuming things at a constant rate, so the proto universe on the other side surely wouldn't expand at a constant rate either.

@axbom@axbom.me we have had about two years of being relentlessly being told that we will lose our jobs to it, so some people will be learning it to remain employable. At least, that's what I did. Have memories of the jump from J2Me phones to the iPhone happening about the same time as 2008 and having a year where I only worked 1 month - so decided I need to learn this to remain employable until the exuberance dies down.

@TimWardCam@c.im @jackscottau@aus.social in the rewrite I mentioned. Some of the funny bits were that previous dev didn't know if their data was a string of JSON or a python dict (given the way they'd written it, it was impossible to know). They had this "scheduler" that had lots of 1 second waits. If something got to the front but couldn't run it was put back on the queue. Hence the job taking hours, instead of a few minutes afterwards.

@TimWardCam@c.im @jackscottau@aus.social it's the cowboy to pro pipeline. My favourite rewrite was one query I saw the outside of the code was terrible and thought I'd see if there was a well thought out core - but no, they were remarkably consistent. Got the rewrite done and the new one was so much faster I wasn't sure if it was working at first.

@technomancy@icosahedron.website this is a good idea. One thing I found useful as a software dev with no free time, who likes to support things is to set (roughly) a budget per year to support projects and artists. Since there are so many things to support it can seem overwhelming, so having an overall number can help. That way it's easier when there's lots left, and on the flip side when there isn't you can consolidate and just sent money to the projects that are aligned with what you want to do.
