R.E.M. – Lifes Rich Pageant (1986, US) Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 126 on The List, submitted by rothko. Released on this day 40 years ago, this was R.E.M.’s fourth studio album, and their first to go gold. With lyrics touching on political activism, environmentalism, and the evils of colonialism, genocide, and political oppression, these songs have barely aged a day. The album's only flaw, in fact, might be the missing apostrophe in the album title. Want to read more? Curtis Mayfield – Curtis / Live! (1971, US) Three stops on our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums were schedule-posted on the blog while I was hiding away in a forest so, now that I'm back, I'll be posting the summaries for all those today. The first spotlight was on number 294 on The List, submitted by myself (buffyleigh). This is the first solo live album from Curtis Mayfield after he had left the soul/R&B vocal group The Impressions. Mayfield had been the primary songwriter for The Impressions and the 12 albums he released with them, so it's perhaps no surprise that half of the songs on this album are Impressions songs. Mayfield would go on to release ~20 more solo studio/soundtrack/live albums (including one after being paralyzed from the neck down, wtf), plus would pen albums for other artists. If you haven’t yet gone down the Curtis Mayfield rabbit hole, this is a great place to start. Want to read more? See the full spotlight on the Fediverse at @1001otheralbums.com or on the blog: https://1001otheralbums.com/2026/06/22/curtis-mayfield-curtis-live-1971-us/ Want to skip straight to the music? Self-Titled Saturday | Wintersun (2004, Finland)

...And we're back! As I’m struggling with words a bit these days – and because we still have a handful of self-titled albums left on The List – I’ve decided to resuscitate last year’s Self-Titled Summer series, albeit as more of a reincarnation for random Saturdays. As before, I’m going to try to keep it basic and just point out some brief(ish) facts, letting you fine readers dig further as desired. And so, for our first STS 2.0 spotlight, we’re going to take a look at number 1134 on The List, submitted by Yuki. This is the debut album of the "extreme majestic technical epic melodic metal" band Wintersun, at this stage essentially the one-man project of Jari Mäenpää, previously of folk metal band Ensiferum.

Want to read more? See the full spotlight on the Fediverse at @1001otheralbums.com or on the blog: https://1001otheralbums.com/2026/05/23/self-titled-saturday-wintersun-2004-finland/

Want to skip straight to the music? Here's a Songlink: https://album.link/i/1456964736. Also, a remastered/refined 2.0 version was released in 2017, so here's that Bandcamp: https://wintersun.bandcamp.com/album/wintersun-20

Happy listening! 🤘

Ironic Hill – (no subject) (2024, UK)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 1207 on The List, submitted by soundclamp. From an anonymous middle-aged man somewhere in the UK, this album features nature-filled lo-fi folk recorded mostly outdoors, DIY-style. You’ll hear birds, heartfelt piano, intimate guitar strumming, life, the sounds of someone trying to capture a peaceful, simple moment.

@vnvobit@mastodon.ie @satsuma@dice.camp Was it the flexi in a 1979 issue that had excerpts of this album? According to the Wikipedia, because of how many subscribers the magazine had at the time (10.5 million), that Nat Geo flexi was the largest single pressing ever! Not sure if that still holds up now, but I bet it's still up there.

Hidden Artist - Hidden Album Name

And now for something completely different.

When I put the next album to be spotlit on - my first ever listen - I immediately wondered if someone would have a different experience of this album if they were able to go into it without any context. So, for anyone who is interested, I am first posting an edited version of the spotlight here without directly identifying the album, complete with a weTransfer link to the album stripped of its metadata for a blind listen. You may be able to quickly identify the album and are welcome to do so below, but please CW any spoilers (or provide wrong answers only). Ready? Okay:

The work we listen to today is an experimental a cappella album that started a movement, featuring a hybrid of avant-garde vocals and spoken word.

In part, this album captures the sounds of the Cold War around the time of the Cuban Revolution, albeit in what seems to be coded lyrics in a language understood by approximately only 80,000 worldwide. The tracks are renditions of traditional pieces that have been passed down for generations within the region, allowed to be performed only by male (or, perhaps, masculine-presenting) individuals, and only after reaching sexual maturity.

The artists captured on this album have never been paid a dime for their work, even though it's the most popular recording of its genre, in part due to the artists' anonymity and reclusiveness. For the same reasons, the artists likely are not aware that an excerpt of this album has travelled to and currently exists in interstellar space.

It is unknown whether the artists had any further releases, or whether they are still alive.

🎧 If you're game to have a blind listen, here's a weTransfer link to download or preview: https://we.tl/t-UhQRsVTvCtW3p6P8

ℹ️ A full spotlight will be posted tomorrow (April 19) on @1001otheralbums.com and the blog with actual identifying information and regular links.

Happy listening!

Anna Thorvaldsdottir – Aerial / In the Light of Air / Aequa (2014-18, Iceland)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on numbers 932, 933, and 934 on The List, submitted by mimo. These three albums feature the works of Icelandic experimental modern classical composer, two being collections of smaller works and one being a single unified work. Unsure if you truly need to listen to not one, not two, but three albums of this incredible composer? Make sure you take a look at the full spotlight, in which I, umm, show that you perhaps should, for science.

Vinnum Sabbathi – of Dimensions & Theories (2020, Mexico)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 942 on The List, submitted by buffyleigh (myself). This is a concept album from the brilliant space/doom metal/rock band out of Mexico, Vinnum Sabbathi, following a storyline set in 2061 but feeling pretty relevant today given the current NASA mission and general state of the world, etc. While the music is primarily instrumental, the band makes use of various spoken samples including historical recordings from NASA to craft the story.

Elisapie – Inuktitut (2023, Inuk)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 1086 on The List, submitted by Yuki. This is a covers album like no other. Inuk alt-folk artist Elisapie chose songs that once were all over the airwaves - including in her hometown of Nunavik - songs that had a strong emotional connection to a person or memory in her past, translated them into Inuktitut, and then created intensely personal versions of those songs. I guarantee you’ve never heard these songs (originally by Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, Cyndi Lauper, Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Blondie, Patrick Hernandez, Leonard Cohen, and Rolling Stones) like this before.

Future Pilot AKA – Salute Your Soul (2004, Scotland)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 393 on The List, submitted by platenworm. Future Pilot AKA is the pseudonym/project of Glasgow-based musician Sushil K. Dade. And this album – the 2nd LP under this project – is primarily chill, uplifting downtempo with a lot of mix-ins, from reggae and dub to gospel and baroque pop, plus appearances by the likes of Philip Glass, Mikey Dread, and a digeridoo. Methinks fans of Thievery Corporation will feel quite comfortable here, and fans of Holger Czukay may recognize a deep-cut reference.

Reveal Party – Favourite Person (2023, Denmark)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 0c on The List, submitted by eva. Reveal Party is the fantastically named indie rock/dream pop project headed by singer-songwriter Emily Holm Nyhuus. Nyhuus’ vulnerable vocals and achingly honest lyrics about her experiences with love and life as a trans woman go straight to the heart, carried by a sonic emotional delivery system that leans heavily on Midwest emo.

Ian William Craig – Durbē (2017, Canada)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 250 on The List, submitted by buffyleigh (me). This is a live album from sound artist, composer, and classically trained vocalist Ian William Craig, recorded in a small Latvian church at the end of his tour nearly 10 years ago for the brilliant studio album Centres. With a couple of tracks stretching past 20 minutes in length, the live format lets Ian experiment to his heart's content, magically looping, delaying, distorting, and further manipulating tape through various faulty cassette machines, creating a gorgeous bed of decaying, droning sounds for his vocals that are sometimes nearly operatic, sometimes also looped and distorted.
