Curtis Mayfield – Curtis / Live! (1971, US) Three stops on our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums were schedule-posted on the blog while I was hiding away in a forest so, now that I'm back, I'll be posting the summaries for all those today. The first spotlight was on number 294 on The List, submitted by myself (buffyleigh). This is the first solo live album from Curtis Mayfield after he had left the soul/R&B vocal group The Impressions. Mayfield had been the primary songwriter for The Impressions and the 12 albums he released with them, so it's perhaps no surprise that half of the songs on this album are Impressions songs. Mayfield would go on to release ~20 more solo studio/soundtrack/live albums (including one after being paralyzed from the neck down, wtf), plus would pen albums for other artists. The Never Ending Impressions is an album by the American soul music group The Impressions which was released on January 9, 1964. Review by John Bush The Never Ending Impressions, the first record to boast the full collaborative power of Johnny Pate and Curtis Mayfield, pushed the idea of the trio as a supper-club act, with covers of "Satin Doll," "September Song," and "Lemon Tree" among the questionable -- if not misguided -- covers. The group's immense talents prevent any of these versions from being complete failures, but they sound much more assured on Mayfield originals like the ballad "I'm So Proud," a Top 20 hit on both the R&B and pop charts.
