@jwz@mastodon.social Semi-related tangent: Many states use license plates to advertise, say, their state tourism board. My pet peeve is California advertises... the web site of the DMV.

Ever since the United Kingdom left the European Union, it no longer needs to receive permission from faceless bureaucrats in Brussels to replace its prime minister. This has led to rapid iteration and true innovation in the prime minister segment.

The person who cleans up my front yard and trims the palm trees is listed in my phone as Kendra Landscaper. It feels a bit impersonal until you realize that's basically how most last names were invented.

#TIL: `git add --intent-to-add`. Signals, well, an intent to add a file. Importantly, this means `git diff` will diff it against an empty file, allowing for a more complete working tree patch such as: git add --intent-to-add . (git status; echo; git diff) >../tree.patch Keep in mind that this also means `git reset --hard` will remove the untracked files.

My house has a Chamberlain garage door opener, which has Security+ 2.0 DRM on both the wireless AND WIRED (i.e. the button you press which goes to the device a few feet away) sides... you know, for the children. And not for vendor lock-in. That DRM has been defeated, and there's a local IoT device I have connected to my Home Assistant, called ratgdo (which I later learned stands for Rage Against the Garage Door Opener) with firmware to use MQTT or ESPHome. Today I switched it from the f...

Me as I'm going through watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukK7lEWoQVA : "Oh, maybe the QR standard actually has a multipart spec which is underutilized but would support both a URL and metadata? Ah no, it's just a URL with metadata jammed into the URL. So if the GS1 QR standard is new, I assume there's a starting sentinel so the web site has flexibility in how they can integrate the metadata into their existing URL constraints? Ah no, it's just gr...

I just don’t want people thinking that Cybertrucks aren’t safe." "Was this Cybertruck safe?" "Well, I was thinking more about the other ones." "The ones that are safe?" "...

Tip of my tongue: the Strontium 5 processor. The reference is likely from a movie / show / game, probably not a book. Obviously a play on Pentium, so likely the media was from the 90s / 2000s. Google is no help.

I own 10 acres of desert land in the middle of nowhere, about 90 minutes north of Reno. I've visited it a few times when I actually lived in Reno, but now I live substantially farther away, so it's not feasible to visit it just to go "yep, still desert". But I should still occasionally verify it's still desert. Luckily, the county has a GIS site which gives fairly high resolution imagery of the county every few years, and, importantly, they actually dat...

libera.chat's new LLM agent policy can be summarized as "Here's a list of straightforward rules any LLM agent must adhere to, such as not joining channels autonomously. Any LLM agent which can be trusted to follow the rules is welcome, but no LLM agent has ever been shown to actually follow the rules, so kindly fuck off." https://libera.chat/news/bot-policy-update

When .zip was added as a TLD a few years go, I registered badidea.zip, and set it up as a web site which immediately served you a file called badidea.zip which contained a QR code which sent you to badidea.zip. I think I made the first domain quine. (I let it lapse last year because, amazingly, .zip TLD is a bad idea.)

YouTube just gave me an in-progress Professional Women's Hockey League game between Minnesota and Montreal, and you know what, sure! Ironically, this plays into a story I told a few weeks ago here which got some traction, that during my job at a dialup ISP in the 90s, I was responsible for streaming local USHL hockey games by plugging the radio into my desktop and sending it to RealBroadcaster. Part of it involved muting the input while ad breaks were on. Obviously, because the ads are...

Your occasional reminder that Signal's "Note to Self" feature is always there as a convenient interchange for getting information (URL, text dump, etc) between your phone and laptop, when other interchange formats are being stupid, which is directly proportional to how badly you need the information on the other device.
