  Since it's nearly impossible to search for this without being inundated with DOM-level focus event information, is there a standard DOM event for when a browser window, hosting a page that is visible, loses or gains focus?

  I think I've finally hit on a big element of why Slack frustrates me so much as a workplace communication tool: the work of communication is transferred from the speaker to the audience by the structure of the tool, versus tools with more intentional communication styles (going back to email, but also including things like bug trackers) where the onus is on the author to structure what they have to say for legibility and to ensure that they reach the intended audiences.

  The FFXIV community is once again having a giggle about the story of Gae Bolga, which means I am once again considering the degree to which identifiable sexual orientations and gender archetypes _cannot be understood_ without the society in which they exist.

  I'm not using third-party libraries because it takes too long to write all that code for myself. I'm using third-party libraries because I think the authors know something about the domains involved, and have reified their understanding in code. If there's no understanding to reify, then it's not useful to me.

  I think it's telling that the common public framing of the Luddite movement, at its _most_ sympathetic, still stops at "yeah, they had some valid points, but they still lost" Motivating resistance to industrial capture of a craft industry more than a century later may not be a complete success, but it's pretty damned far from a failure. So is providing a clear way to discuss that capture that the average person can at least get their head around.

This press release makes me _extraordinarily_ glad that I dodged the metaphorical bullet. The news itself is depressing, but the things it reveals about the company's leadership are inexcusable.

  Watching people hit the activation energy on their discontent with Github is giving me life. Look, moving off of a service like that is not a zero-cost decision. It's a fairly expensive one, in terms of time investment, _especially_ if you've taken Github up on offers like free compute for your build pipeline, but even if you're relying on repository hosting and not much else it's a pain in the ass. Sticking around until that cost is worth paying makes sense.

  Take a long breath. Remember that someone is getting paid to persuade you that their pet technology is The Future and that Everyone Is Using It But You. Remember that that's just advertising - an intrusive and noxious kind even against the intrusive and noxious baseline, but still just advertising. Do something that matters to you instead.

The incumbents and the financiers backing explosive-growth venture startups can afford compliance resources that a community admin can't, and these bills are characteristically long on compliance obligations.
