I think it's telling that the common public framing of the Luddite movement, at its _most_ sympathetic, still stops at "yeah, they had some valid points, but they still lost" Motivating resistance to industrial capture of a craft industry more than a century later may not be a complete success, but it's pretty damned far from a failure. So is providing a clear way to discuss that capture that the average person can at least get their head around.

  • If I were a stocking-maker whose livelihood had been destroyed I don't think that'd bring me much comfort personally, and craft stockings just aren't a thing now, so they did lose in that sense, but it wasn't ever pointless and it wasn't completely without success.
