I think I've finally hit on a big element of why Slack frustrates me so much as a workplace communication tool: the work of communication is transferred from the speaker to the audience by the structure of the tool, versus tools with more intentional communication styles (going back to email, but also including things like bug trackers) where the onus is on the author to structure what they have to say for legibility and to ensure that they reach the intended audiences.
