  I was hoping for your help with something. Is there a particular font that’s instantly recognizable to someone who lives where you do, and appreciated/recognized/hated there, but completely unknown elsewhere? Something on road signs, street names, transit, infrastructure, stuff like that? I’ll share some examples in the thread. I’d love to learn more about these. I’m not afraid of links in languages I don’t understand, ha. (Also please repost for reach if you are willing!) Thank you!

  You know that joke that at every olympics they should start with regular people from the street participating, just so the viewers can truly realize how impossibly hard those competitions are? Today I saw something really cool – an arcade Pac-Man game modded so it starts at the last possible level, 255. You finish it, and the next level is the famous kill screen. I didn’t manage to finish it.

  I find these really interesting – this strange hybrid of very old-school displays that only showed a few options, married with vector fonts, but shown as dots, all using pretty modern LED tech.

  I know software updates can be exhausting these days. On top of regular weariness of things changing, there’s stuff like Liquid Glass, or thoughtless AI integrations. So, I’m curious: Was there a recent software update you can remember, anywhere, that just made you happy? Something that made an app genuinely better for you, or showed a developer listening to users, or was just plain old delightful?

  I know people speak so highly about Flighty, but I almost always see it confused about time in strange ways: the live activity lagging behind reality (telling me the flight will be 30 minutes longer until I switch to the app, and then it becomes correct), suddenly showing stuff like “takeoff 6 hours overdue” when it’s been tracking my airborne flight correctly for 6 hours, and so on. It seems like this should be a core competency. Is this what other people see, or am I just unlucky?

  Still don’t quite know what to do with this project, but just updated text.makeup with new Unicode/emoji, SF Symbols, transgender symbols, and a few other things.   This is kind of random, but I found it funny how I had a whole book named after this key, and up until this week I haven’t been aware that Microsoft once had a whole series of game controllers that came… with a Shift key (or, button), complete with a ⇧ icon. Apparently it did sort what Shift does on a regular keyboard, e.g. you’d press it with another button to change its meaning.

  Is it possible in CSS to have an image that has originally specified size (= no relayout when it loads), both (independent) max-width and max-height, and has a border (which precludes object-fit and all those shenanigans?)| It seems that when max-width and max-height both kick in, they basically override aspect ratio to become something alien. object-fit allows the image to keep aspect ratio “inside itself”, but then that ruins the border which wraps the resulting pillar- or letterboxing.

  I just saw this on bloomberg.com. (Second screenshot is after I tapped the big button on the first screenshot.) I was excited about the Apple Pay integration, but my god, is it purposely written in such an obfuscated and dense way to trick me? It’s $1.99 for first month, $39.99/month afterwards. You could just say that.

  What causes this type of deterioration? Is it just the topmost paint layers fading away and exposing previous ones, so in effect we’re watching the painting process in reverse? Or more complicated than that?
