I'm about to write a letter to my small town mayor about why separation of church and state is an important and fundamentally American idea and tempted to just call him an ignorant, dangerously stupid fuck and leave it at that.

Wait, wait, wait. We're doing Monday again? Seriously?! Didn't we learn anything last week?

Just got a cavity filled and they numbed the fuck out of my face, for which I'm grateful, but I am on a interview panel in an hour and a little afraid they'll think I had a stroke. 🫤

After burning a stupid number of hours to get a working build environment for this old project I'm finally making the actual changes that are needed to the code and gods, there is nothing like spelunking through your own old codebase to teach humility. Boilerplate is annoying but not nearly so much as obscure indirection. Chasing down where I need to make a change in order to not break anything is the hardest thing. Good stuff: sensible abstractions that are easy to extend. (I know, defin...

What's the saying? When you're used to privilege, equality can feel like persecution? I think to understand the mindset of white christians you have to realize how much unconscious effort they have to put into defending beliefs that don't agree with reality. They feel any part of culture that doesn't agree with and reinforce their beliefs as an attack. It's such a fragile identity because it requires tolerating large amounts of cognitive dissonance. To th...

#bloomscrolling #poetry I have watched a raindrop caress a flower with the tenderness of a lover and found more meaning in that moment where it clings to the edge than in the philosophies of men

Got a job notice from Anthropic yesterday and first of all: hell no. But second of all, are they for real? 320k - 405k?!?! 👀

Human progress isn't measured by industry, it's measured by the value you place on a life. An unimportant life. A life without privilege. The boy who died on the river, that boy's value is your value. That's what defines an age. That's what defines a species. - The Doctor

What does it mean to be whole to be truthful? It means I don't look away I let myself feel my feelings now Drinking down the moment whether bitter or sweet If I try to ignore it the irony is that's when the trap springs I can only truly be present now or trapped in the past There's no middle ground But one must also tip the scales a bit Fear and sadness sneak in and take over easily They're loud Joy is quiet and must be invited If I am to be whole I must be kind to all m...

Took a big bite out of the 100,000 mile maintenance on Drax, my #vanconversion project. Spark plugs and coils have been replaced, PCV replaced, coolant and oil drained in preparation for oil change and water pump/drive belt replacement. It's kinda cool to be able to work on the engine from both sides but sheesh, there was a lot of stuff to work around to get the coils off. Had to improvise tools to reach a couple of them.

Thinking about Klingon religion this evening, as one does, a theological thread with a very nerdy theme. Klingons have religion but they don't have gods, they *had* gods. Then all the Klingons banded together and fought a glorious war against the gods, which they *won*, and then they killed the gods. Kahless, who they revere, isn't a god or demigod or anything supernatural. He's just a Klingon who was so fucking badass that his stories sound supernatural. But he's not held up...

"something awaits for me in the divine for resisting" @hankgreen I get your message but let me submit that stubbornness is a sometimes useful muscle and muscles don't get strong unless you exercise them. There is a liminal space in the moment after the code compiles but before you've run the tests where it exists in a superposition of working/broken. Until the tests collapse the waveform one can float upon the endless sea of possibilities.

To install python modules on windows that have a component written in C or C++ you need to have MSVC C++ Build Tools installed. In order to run the installer for MSVC C++ Build Tools you need Dot Net 4.6. But Dot Net 4.6 won't installing in this Win 10 VM for *reasons*. I may be done computing for the day.

#poem #conservation Earthrise - Amanda Gorman Where despite disparities We all care to protect this world, This riddled blue marble, this little true marvel To muster the verve and the nerve To see how we can serve Our planet. You don’t need to be a politician To make it your mission to conserve, to protect, To preserve that one and only home That is ours, To use your unique power To give next generations the planet they deserve. We are demonstrating, creating, advocating We heed this inconv...
