What's the saying? When you're used to privilege, equality can feel like persecution?
I think to understand the mindset of white christians you have to realize how much unconscious effort they have to put into defending beliefs that don't agree with reality. They feel any part of culture that doesn't agree with and reinforce their beliefs as an attack. It's such a fragile identity because it requires tolerating large amounts of cognitive dissonance. To them Kirk felt like a hero because he defended and confirmed their worldview/biases.

I think it's useful to remember: people usually, honestly believe their religion. But one can't look to scripture or even necessarily church teachings to understand what those beliefs are. You need to look at their actions, attitudes, and the things they are willing to do in the name of their god.

@intrepidhero@vmst.io I think I understand. To parallel in another non important way, if I hate to eat beans I might go looking for bloggers who also dislike beans. So I find them and think “these are my people”. It’s confirmation bias folded over into an identity. Like that?
