Papers mills and other manipulative practices are a major problem in the scientific publishing system. Addressing this problem requires an in-depth system-level understanding of dynamics leading to these practices. At @cwts we have PhD position to work on this! https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/vacancies/2025/q2/15601-phd-candidate-paper-mills-and-systematic-manipulation-in-research-publishin

#WebOfScience just announced that it has started to index preprints in addition to journal articles https://clarivate.com/blog/the-preprint-citation-index-linking-preprints-to-the-trusted-web-of-science-ecosystem/. This is a significant development toward giving full recognition to preprints as important research outputs. Together with @cwts colleague @neesjanvaneck, I'm working on a blog post comparing indexing of preprints in Web of Science with other bibliographic databases. Stay tu...

I just had the pleasure of being invited to comment on the excellent report 'Can REF output quality scores be assigned by AI? Experimental evidence' by Mike Thelwall and colleagues http://cybermetrics.wlv.ac.uk/ai/Can_REF_output_quality_scores_be_assigned_by_AI.pdf. I offered four brief reflections, commenting on what I think are key issues in the use of AI for research assessment purposes, in particular in the context of the UK REF. @RoRInstitute @jameswilsdon

In last Friday's @cwts seminar Diana Hicks offered a critical perspective on open science. I couldn't attend, but just watched the recording https://www.cwts.nl/seminars/announcements?article=n-s2y264. Reform movements in science (RRA, OS, EDI, etc.) tend to develop dogmas that are being accepted uncritically. Good to see critical analyses like Diana's that challenge these dogmas. However, many of Diana's arguments don't really convince me, and they som...

Interesting results in @digitalscience and @springernature #StateOfOpenData report https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.24428194.v1. This graph shows a breakdown by field of the openness of survey respondents to four open science practices. The pattern is almost the same for all fields: Researchers are most strongly in support of open access, followed by open data, then open peer review and finally preprinting.
