@jplebreton@mastodon.social to be clear, even if it was able to read 94% of characters as they claim, that means it's getting more than half of all license plates wrong.

Took my first high-speed spill on my electric bike. High speed by my standards, not by eBike standards, I know these things can go like 40 mph if you jailbreak them. Dragged myself home battered and bruised. It is super nice to have a bike with a motor for that. Last time I did this, I had to actually pedal home with a busted rib, that sucked. I don't think I busted anything this time, but you know, the body can take a few hours to compile its after-action reports.

Dammit, I can't quite sort out #Godot's shaders. I can get this to give me proper hint_depth_texture responses on opaque objects but not on transparent ones. I want to know the depth of the pixel I'm currently drawing. I found a way on the other computer quite by accident, this approach I found today isn't quite as robust.

The number of folks saying there's no way the name 'GIMP' ever stopped anyone from using or contributing to it is extraordinary. I have *never* been in an office that has allowed me to install GIMP. Never. I have never even been able to get past the sniff of a pitch about GIMP. Because of the name. The level of disconnect people have with basic reality is refreshing. What is their world like?

Hot take of the day: we could have stopped Adobe ages ago if GIMP had any other name. GIMP is nominative determinism applied to open source. If Fedora was named FUCKBOI, it would have failed too.

There's this interesting line in art, where if you suck in the right way I'm super happy to see it, but if you show a little too much competence the part of my brain that cares about implementation turns on and goes "nah, below par here here and here- and here too blunt, here too weak-" Sometimes I find an artist that falls on both sides of that line depending on the project, which really reveals how much of it is just my taste.

Where did this suddenly-popular game genre term "extraction" come from? What kind of gameplay does it mean, exactly? I presume it's a kind of gameplay I hate, or I would have seen it coming from games I've been following.

So here's a simple writing tip for solo devs making indie games: If you plan to have a joke in your scene, and you're worried it might go on too long: just make it an option for the player to chase it. If the player volunteers to push the joke, they'll live with the time it takes to tell it. If they don't, move on with a light touch. Just be clear it's not a meaningful choice. Wouldn't want them to think points are attached.

I saw a post about post-scarcity in Star Trek and what it means in terms of just giving stuff away, and it's a very fun thing to talk about. A lot of society is already set up to give things away. For example, plumbing and roads. It's conceptually pretty trivial to expand that to more or less any staple. What's really interesting to me is giving away art. I think what differentiates fictional utopias is how they handle this question.

Walking down a big street, the crosswalks are blocked by construction, there's a brief break in traffic- And literally everyone jaywalks. Both sides, for hundreds of yards, everyone walking down the street glances over their shoulder and crosses at the exact same moment. Syncronized jaywalking.

I love indie games. I love not knowing if I've glitched out the game or if it's intentional or what.

The fact that so many base-builders have a high-level meta of "DON'T GET RICH!!!!! STAY POOR!" is both annoying and hilarious. It does mean that a lot of settlements are annihilated because they got a breeding pair of goats or chickens, though, because "rich" and "poor" are not determined by any kind of actual excess of wealth, but by the amount of military murder warkillfighter readiness you have.

I think one of the epitomes of "Dark Souls Thinking" is Kenshi. It has a reputation for being super hard, but it's a grind with only a few failstates, like more or less any RPG. The concept of "it's super hard unless you grind" is a strange one, because the second half is left quietly unstated. "This game is so hard!" crows a player. "I'm going to, uh, 'get gud'-" (Game gives him le...

The only reason I monitor BlueSky is to see indie games. None of those devs ever show up here, even the ones that are theoretically active here only post game dev on BlueSky. But it does mean a huge number of the posts I see on BlueSky are people doing gamedev things that make my teeth hurt. Like "noooo, you REALLY don't want to do it that way - I know you've spent 500 hours implementing that, but you need to throw it away-"

My boss sent an email with a list 1 2 3 4 5 I replied with a few suggested edits 1 2 3 4 5 When I look at my reply in Gmail, it reads 1 * * * * ...? When I hit reply to edit it, it shows 1 2 3 4 5 Look at the reply 1 * * * * ... ??????

Well, I'm sure a lot of you have heard this basic-ass medical advice before: if you're getting old, get a doctor to shove a camera up your butt. I don't think people are properly informed about how useful just one middle-aged colonoscopy is. Not only will it tell you whether you have cancer and the state of your insides, butt they will also casually remove precancers and tell you how often you should get your butt maintained. It's super easy for you, the patien...

Whoa, House Flipper's free? You should definitely play around with it. It's a genre progenitor despite not being that old or popular.

Ahah. I see the updated Godot did not preserve my settings and is back to "enter means PLEASE AUTOCOMPLETE ALL THE TIME FOREVER ALWAYS PLEAAAAASSEEE!!!!!!!!! I HATE CORRECT LINES OF CODE PLEASE CHANGE THE LAST VARIABLE TO SOME RANDOM 90-CHARACTER STRING OF GIBBERISH!!!!!!!!!" Still a fuckin' trash default, but if you're not aware, the setting is in a subtab off of editor settings.

I still keep an eye on Space Engineers 2, but it's so bizarre that they made it literally The Same Game But With Better Graphics. I am still astonished they didn't add reasonable thruster mechanics. They're still using no-gimble orthogonal thrusters, so all your ships are like 400 thrusters pointed every direction at all times. It's really friggin' ugly and annoying, limits engine designs, and there's loads of fun ways to get around it that they...

The newest version of Firefox added browser.ml.linkPreview.* settings in about:config, which apparently serve no purpose other than popping up massive, stupid overlays where they offer to use AI to describe the bookmark you've visited 500 times. So fuckin' stupid that we have to constantly disable more and more settings they've randomly added to get around the fact that we've disabled all the settings. It's just the fucking worst, people that run companies are all brain-dead...
