"One guy in #Sweden built a #searchengine to fight Google, and it works. It's called #MarginaliaSearch. It runs its own #crawler and builds its own #index instead of borrowing Bing's. It has no ads, no investors, and no loans. What it does differently: it ranks for text-heavy, non-commercial pages. Personal blogs. Old university pages. The weird corners SEO strangled. Every result tells you whether the page uses affiliate links and JavaScript, and you can filter them out. There's an "explore" mode that just shows you random sites from the index. It's open source under AGPL, so you can host your own copy. It's keyword-based, so don't type a full question at it. Type two nouns and see where you land. Every #searchengine now shows you the same twelve #monetizedpages." https://marginalia-search.com/

@eliasulrich@hachyderm.io not very good though, hopefully it gets better. I did a search for my name as I have had a blog for over 20 years, didn't come up.

@eliasulrich@hachyderm.io Why won't they let us have nice things? "The search engine is currently under being hit so aggressively by bots it's interfering with the ability to serve regular search traffic. Emergency anti-scraping measures are enabled. Sorry about the inconvenience."

@eliasulrich@hachyderm.io Genuinely impressive challenge to put something like this together. Just the capacity to scale to demand alone is mind boggling. It's fascinating to see the web though this lens.

@eliasulrich@hachyderm.io I just tried a search on Marginalia and DDG’s NoAI. The page is a WordPress blog. The Marginalia search found the page at index=20. DDG didn’t find the page after index=150. Looks like I’ll be searching using Marginalia before wasting my time on DDG’s “search”, which is Bing’s database.

@eliasulrich@hachyderm.io Is it good, is it bad? Is it vibe coded, is it a Honeypot? I don't know. What I do know is I searched for 'photography', then got stuck for 20 minutes on three pages from the top results that were all free of ads, dickovers and affiliate links, and they all smelled distinctly of human generated content. ☺️

  • @eliasulrich@hachyderm.io Something other than Google -- that sounds wonderful. But technical achievement aside, what makes Google succeed is money. From other comments it appears you received some funding from a government agency? What is going to be the source of funding to keep the lights on for this project? Seems to me the practical consideration of who's paying for it needs to be given consideration and mention.

I definitely like that somebody has managed to get as far as this. Until I saw this I was worried that we might have gotten to the point where the barrier to entry was too high for any new search engines to get created. It would be concerning if we were forever stuck with only Microsoft, Google, and third party frontends for those two. I am concerned whether that search engine will survive with donations as the only source of income. If he gets more users the service might get more expensive to keep up. One thing that does put me off a little bit is that most of the URLs in the search results are censored and that every link away from the site goes through a redirector that obscures the URL. But I sure hope it will be successful, as we need alternatives to the big two.

@eliasulrich@hachyderm.io oh wow, this is actually really really good. i was expecting shitty results but the results are mostly great. the only thing about it i think is weird is that prioritizing text heavy pages means looking up the name of a website will often show a text heavy page from the website before the home page.
