@gruber@mastodon.social Curious why that Serial # box is half-width. Do you think they were worried that people would get a 10-digit serial and not think it was correct to put it in a 20-digit-wide box? And that's not even getting into the [OK] [Cancel] part :-)

@gruber@mastodon.social who would put OK on the left side and cancel on the right? 🥲

@gruber@mastodon.social The confirmation button is on the wrong side, and should instead be labelled “Dolt”

@gruber@mastodon.social At least the OK button is set to default even if it is in the wrong place…

@gruber@mastodon.social Anyone know if there is a reason the OK button is supposed to be on the right (other than convention)?

@gruber@mastodon.social while the position of the OK button is flawed, it's not unusual for the time. But the fact it's not disabled when nothing has been entered yet is making me twitch.

@gruber@mastodon.social we have code in Firefox to handle this difference between windows and the rest of the OSes https://searchfox.org/firefox-main/source/toolkit/content/widgets/moz-button-group/moz-button-group.mjs#100-102

@gruber@mastodon.social we were learning a new Christmas game, it’s simple in practice but slightly complex to explain, but one of the rules was “you wouldn’t regift a present you just got that would be rude”. So simple, and clearly resonated as everyone remembers the transferrable logic. Break these basic rules and the whole thing falls apart. Screens, games, interfaces they only exist because we and the designer pretend this place exists and we’re all fine with it.

@gruber@mastodon.social I’m bothered by the euphemism of ‘personalize’ in place of ‘register’.

@gruber@mastodon.social I'm not experienced enough with what was possible in the OS versions that would have been around then, but the first thing I thought of was why is any button preselected at all? Why isn't the cursor in the Name blank? I'm assuming you cannot successfully click OK until you've entered the serial, so having the button preselected is forcing the user to move focus before any usable action is permitted. I don't like that.

@gruber@mastodon.social It was the fact that there was no paste function. It may also have been early enough that 0s and Os were used

@gruber@mastodon.social (1) I don’t like that the buttons are not grouped together next to each other at the right side of the window. (2) The small negative space between the last field and the buttons, but that might have been normal at the time. (3) The reversed presentation of the buttons does not make sense regarding the standard. Except may be when you are a left-handed person 🙂 But than placing them both at the left side of the window makes more sense as well, I suppose.
