@MisterMoo@mstdn.social @delric@mastodon.social The thing to complain about isn't that they default to Google. It's that they only include search engines in the list that have paid TAC deals. Only search engines that agree to pay Apple for the traffic are in the list, and there's no option for users to add custom ones.

What gave Tim Cook's privacy letter heft in 2014 wasn't just the clarity of its plain language, but the fact that you didn't have to take his word for it that the ads Apple showed you respected your privacy, because Apple didn't show you ads in 2014. https://daringfireball.net/2026/07/ternus_apple_slippery_slope

“It’s like wondering why all the screws in a building were hammered into the walls, and then finding out that the guy who oversaw construction founded and co-owns the world’s biggest hammer manufacturer. Windows uses Philips head screws, Linux uses hex screws, and MacOS requires Torx — but a hammer works the same way with all screws. That’s Electron.” https://daringfireball.net/2026/07/claudes_criminally_bad_mac_app_is_an_inside_job

“You might think it counterintuitive that a movement obsessed with software would spearhead a severe decline in the design quality of software. But software brain is an obsession with software as a medium in and of itself. One of the most American sentiments is this: Live and let live. Stay out of others’ personal lives. That’s what’s fueling this “MAGA Republicans are weirdos” vibe. It’s not just fucking weird but *wrong* that they are so concerned with how others, including every woman, chooses to live their own lives. It rubs most Americans wrong. It’s not a liberal/conservative thing. It’s an American thing. I think it’s a human thing too — and America should exemplify that aspect of humanity.

@agiletortoise@mastodon.social @schwa@mastodon.social I switched from Bartender to Ice a few months ago and, so far, have found Ice to be the best one of these utilities I've ever used. I'm still on Sequoia, though, so I don't know how Ice does with Tahoe. Another one I've used and at one point gladly paid $10 for the pro version is Vanilla: https://store.matthewpalmer.net/vanilla-pro

@agiletortoise@mastodon.social I don't think these are UI conventions. It’s properly supporting the hardware of the remote control. And basic accessibility. Apple has long enforced things like trying to use the volume buttons on iPhones for purposes other than adjusting audio volume. Same should be true for the buttons on the Apple TV remote.

New Fox chyron is excellent. Team names: huge. Score: huge. Logos: none. Colors say enough. Needless chrome: none. Timeouts remaining: prominent but not distracting. Down and yards to go indicator: conveys which team has the ball. Typography: classic, legible, bold, timeless. Outstanding design.

If you, like me, are keeping a Mac on MacOS 15 Sequoia for now (I tend not to upgrade my work Machine until the .1 or .2 releases at the earliest), be careful with Software Update. It sure looks like clicking the “Update Tonight” or “Update Now” buttons next to the available 15.7.2 update will update to that, but if you click the little (i) info button, it sure looks like what will happen is that you'll install the upgrade to 26.1 Tahoe.
