OK Fediverse, I have had 3 gout attacks in my life, 1 about 3 years ago, 2 in the last 3 months. It’s bloody miserable and colchicine is a horrible drug. Allopurinol sounds risky too. As a gout newbie is anybody having success with lifestyle changes to manage attacks ? I don’t eat red meat or shellfish. Occasional beer or red wine. Uric acid was 7.8 mg/dL Doc says below 6 is advisable. Any recommendations on books or references ? If you want to dm suggestions that’s fine. #gout

@richardinsandy@c.im Ouch. That's horrible for you. Might this help? "Michael Greger M.D. FACLM · February 24, 2016 · Volume 29 If the uric acid crystals that trigger gout come from the breakdown of purines, should gout patients avoid even healthy, purine-rich foods, such as beans, mushrooms, and cauliflower?" It's certainly worth watching and following up the links to further info at the bottom of the page. There are also transcripts https://nutritionfacts.org/video/preventing-gout-attacks-with-diet/

  • @richardinsandy@c.im my mother has gout. She gave up ice cream, milk and butter and that seemed to help with flare ups. She doesn't drink alcohol but she never has

@richardinsandy@c.im I used allopurinol daily for 30 years. I only stopped because my doctor put me on medication for some other issues, which then gave me problems, so dropped all meds, added them back one at a time to see which was the source. It wasn't the allopurinol. Colchicine was useful during an attack, but the doctors were withholding of it for no explained reason. Oddly, haven't had an episode in about two years, with no lifestyle changes, other than less beer (very triggering).

  • @richardinsandy@c.im I've had gout on and off for 30 years or more. I'm 80 now. I quit drinking about 10 years ago and keep on a low purine diet. Colchicine gave me bad kidney tests numbers. Taking Allopurinol now w/no side effects, uric acid 5.4. No bad episodes for 10 years. As they say, diet and exercise :)

@richardinsandy@c.im @VWDasher@mymasto.com question. How is your weight? I’m not saying that it will fix things but if you are overweight it seems to be more likely. (I had what was initially thought to be gout, but turned out to be something very weird and unexpected which cleared up as I lost weight)

  • @richardinsandy@c.im I am now on Allopurinol, fortunately with no obvious side effects. Prior to that I avoided citrus, no oranges, no fruit juices. Also, avoided oily fish, so no mackerel, very little salmon. I don't drink alcohols anyway, I seem to be hypersensitive to it and have been avoiding it for over a decade. I have had very few recent bouts of gout, and they were much more manageable than before. Painful, but not the 'I'd cut my own foot off with a rusty saw' level of agony. Good luck with managing it. It is a horrible affliction.
