@atpfm@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social a way to not run tailscale on every node of your cluster would be to just enable subnet routing on two of them (for high availability) and then connect to the local network IPs from your source which is running tailscale. https://tailscale.com/docs/features/subnet-routers and https://youtu.be/UmVMaymH1-s

@atpfm@mastodon.social Wasn’t there an external chassis with card slots in the past? Could there not be an external enclosure that connects to a Mac Studio via Thunderbolt 5. Giving the expandability of the Mac Pro as an addon for those that need it.

@atpfm@mastodon.social Long Islander here. I know where Fire Island is. I have often been to Fire Island. I go to Robert Moses beach quite often. It is on Fire Island and I don’t count that beach as part of Fire Island even though it has the FIRE ISLAND LIGHT HOUSE on it. The vast majority of people that claim to live on Fire Island spend the majority of the year not on Fire Island. Marco, you live on Long Island.

@atpfm@mastodon.social Idea for an other tier list: rank all PowerMacs, Mac Pros. How good/bad was it for the time?

@atpfm@mastodon.social While it is a complicated process and going through "Recovery" using a 2nd Mac, all desktop Macs do support "upgradable" storage. John was even considering doing it for his next Mac, wasn't he?

@atpfm@mastodon.social The tradeoff is: a 16-lane PCIe card always has the potential for 4x the bandwidth as ThunderBolt (which has traditionally using only 4-lanes of PCIe). I'm sure there are lots (a few hundred?) of niche users which Apple is kicking off the platform, who use: - high end networking; - high end video / audio; - high end storage; - who knows what other shockingly small niches out there. I'm sure Apple's making the right business choice.

@atpfm@mastodon.social the "mistake", from a Mac Pro perspective, Apple made was going with a monolithic architecture design as opposed to a chiplet architecture design. AMD has been ruining Intel in the PC chip performance at all levels of the CPU industry in part *because* they chose chiplets as their design paradigm. They have released in the last two years a couple of white papers that may be of interest: Chiplet discussion: https://www.amd.com/content/dam/amd/en/documents/solutions/technologies/chiplet-architecture-white-paper.pdf GPUs using chiplets: https://www.amd.com/content/dam/amd/en/documents/instinct-tech-docs/white-papers/amd-cdna-4-architecture-whitepaper.pdf

@atpfm@mastodon.social i’m having trouble getting reliable numbers on what kinds of laptops school districts across the country are buying. My personal experience across three states, 12 districts, and a couple of hundred schools is that very few buildings are still buying Chromebook. And it is entirely because they physically breakdown, not because of device management.

@atpfm@mastodon.social @siracusa@mastodon.social I’m with you in the spirit of your post-show. However 9 Supreme Court justices over-rule in this case. While for all visible purposes it would appear Long Island is an island; It has legally been clarified as and deemed a peninsula (and thus an extension of the mainland). https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/76297/sort-bogus-reason-long-island-isnt-considered-island https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/469/504/

@atpfm@mastodon.social John’s claim of Long Island reminds me of my grandparents. They grew up in Brooklyn but haven’t lived there since the _60s_ but they are forever experts on what Brooklyn and New York is like. Granted they’ve lived in 2 different states longer than they ever did New York but they forever identify as New Yorkers.

@atpfm@mastodon.social My high school (I graduated less than 5 years ago) had computer labs filled with iMacs. Each one was had its local storage wiped *weekly* (as did the windows machines in other labs). They all used macOS’ built in network accounts and after each reset they took about 2 minutes to re-log in for the “first” time (as opposed to seconds if you’d already logged in). All of our documents and in-app settings were preserved between resets (though iirc downloads and desktop folders were reset). https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/mac-help/mh27627/mac

@atpfm@mastodon.social The Mainland: I am in the middle of my seventh decade, and as an army brat, I have “lived“ in 22 states (four years in New York ) and visited all the rest. My guess is that since the time when Jon left, and before the time Marco moved there, mainland became popular ironically. Because the Hawaiian definition is the only accurate one. The continental US is the mainland if you live in the Pacific, and it is the lower 48 if you live in Alaska

@atpfm@mastodon.social I know nobody is arguing against this point, but when apple made the M-series chips with a unified memory architecture based on LP RAM, they shut the door on any and all future Mac Pros. Unless they are willing to bifurcate their lineup and make an upgradable, but slower RAM-based CPUs (which they won’t), on-package RAM will never provide enough capacity for a true pro machine. Or alternatively, they could make an M-chip with an HBM RAM interface😂 https://mstdn.social/@joelion/112315061776367661
