@atpfm@mastodon.social The Mainland: I am in the middle of my seventh decade, and as an army brat, I have “lived“ in 22 states (four years in New York ) and visited all the rest. My guess is that since the time when Jon left, and before the time Marco moved there, mainland became popular ironically. Because the Hawaiian definition is the only accurate one. The continental US is the mainland if you live in the Pacific, and it is the lower 48 if you live in Alaska

@atpfm@mastodon.social using “the mainland“ is a minor flex that you are aware of Hawaiian culture. Similar to the use of Mahalo in Southern California. Or the occasional use by New Zealanders of “the West Island“ to refer to Australia
