I'm appalled to see the European Commission apparently embracing closed source, commercial, ID and age verification mandatory, social media today - in the very face of the technology sovereignty and online freedoms debates. I think they've just thrown away the greatest opportunity to be the champion of all things open and collaborative, and to live and demonstrate their own values. Incredibly disappointed. 🔥 🔥 from @_elena@mastodon.social who nails it, and asks crucial questions. https://blog.elenarossini.com/w-social-public-institutions-and-the-theater-of-european-digital-sovereignty/

@andypiper@macaw.social @_elena@mastodon.social my take on it is that the politicians want to control the means by which people can be social, because that provides them with immense power: https://bsky.app/profile/thisismissem.social/post/3moilbymuyc2y

  • @andypiper@macaw.social The European Commission just reflexively hates tech. They're often accidentally right because big tech sucks ass, but I wish people would stop pretending they're doing it on purpose or with some morals in mind.

@andypiper@macaw.social @_elena@mastodon.social I’m guessing it’s no coincidence the UK is going down the same dark path. Collusion and forces at play hidden from view. This is all horrible.

@andypiper@macaw.social @_elena@mastodon.social Turns out the only thing the EU dislikes about US social media policy is that they don't own it themselves. They're just fine with spying if it's their eyes doing it.

  • @andypiper@macaw.social @_elena@mastodon.social Hopefully some are, in fact, just confused; but I'm not sure that this really runs contrary to their values. The whole 'age verification' thing, even when not just an excuse to check IDs, is basically a sign of treating online services as intrinsically and inevitably dangerous; and once you concede that 'sovereignty' pretty much boils down to having domestic dangerous tool vendors, no different than defense contracting.

Hi @andypiper@macaw.social @_elena@mastodon.social, fear not nor despair. IMO 🇪🇺 ever has been ambivalent to say the least or schizophrenic to put it more bluntly. There seems to be a huge longing in the politics-media bubble for a July 2013 Twitter and everything that looks vaguely like that is cheered enthusiastically. They're big orgs, so it's nature to respect other big, centralized, hierarchical (paternalist or outright authoritarian) org. The Brachiosaurus hardly can befriend a mouse. We know how that went. That ambivalence, however, is the chance to take and foster social bonds while the pretenders populate the stages.

  • @andypiper@macaw.social @_elena@mastodon.social The @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu are pandering to commercial concerns. There is already a privacy-preserving and open source solution - Mastodon. We don’t need an EU-based version of #Bluesky or #threads. A big no from me. Hopefully, this fails hard and “lessons learned”.
