@andypiper@macaw.social @_elena@mastodon.social Hopefully some are, in fact, just confused; but I'm not sure that this really runs contrary to their values. The whole 'age verification' thing, even when not just an excuse to check IDs, is basically a sign of treating online services as intrinsically and inevitably dangerous; and once you concede that 'sovereignty' pretty much boils down to having domestic dangerous tool vendors, no different than defense contracting.

It's just an excuse to force adults to hand over their ID to whoever says “Papers, please, Tovarish.” Not many countries (people, not politicians) are going to like that model.
